Asking schools to match offers of "lower" schools.

I couldn't find a thread addressing this, but I would like to know how asking a college to match the offer of a lower ranked school usually turns out. What kind of answer could one expect from them? This is mostly hypothetical for now, but I might have to do something like this if I appeal whatever aid I'm offered (haven't gotten it yet). I've always heard that schools are more inclined to raise your offers if you show them a better offer you've gotten from their competitor, so are they more inclined to just not care if you show them a better offer from a school ranked 10+ spots lower than them? Should you just not bring it up at all then?

I did this and I don’t know what is going to happen. Emory didn’t give me enough, but Tulane made me a basically full ride offer.

I’ll end up at Tulane most likely.

thats hott emory2013, hope it works out well-

You are not going to get anything if you don’t ask. If all you have is a better offer from a lower rated school, then that is all you have to work with.

Send them a letter along the lines of:

1) Would love to attend your school, but can’t afford it.
2) A lower rated school is affordable, and enclosed is a copy of the offer.
3) Is there anything else the school can do.

They probably won’t match the offer, but if they move 1/2 way, that is better than nothing.

^^^Agree with OD, it won’t hurt to try. Depending on the schools involved, 10 spots in the ranking can still be a peer school.

Okay. I just wanted to make sure that they wouldn’t scoff and tell you “well, go there then” or something. :]

Building off of this, if a school hasn’t given you your package thus far, even though you turned everything months ago, is this fair enough reason to demand more money? I mean, I’m not expecting a full ride or anything, but my parents and I have been calling, emailing, and doing everything we can to figure out why our package has been so delayed. And the website you can use to check your finaid documents still shows two of the docs we turned in as “under review”! We called and asked them to just tell us the aid over the phone, but they couldn’t do that because they hadn’t finished making it yet.
There’s limited time left before May 1st, and we have no idea how much money we’re going to be offered. And if we have to appeal, we most likely won’t get a decision until after the deadline. We won’t even have the chance other’s had to send in proper appeals and things. It’s been a little ridiculous, and I fully believe that if it doesn’t arrive today, we have basis on that alone to request more money. Do you think we’re right/that will work?
