Aspiring Politician

Ok, first post. Ever since i was little, Yale has been the school for me. The whole Legacy thing, you know. I have several options and Yale is far out in front of the others. I know everybody asks this but im going to anyway. Can I Get In?

Here we go.

First of all. If anybody is familiar with the IB (International Baccalaureate) program, I am one of 11 IB Diploma students in my school. Does this have the real power to get me into Yale as I have been told?

Second, to the Grades. I have a 3.9 unweighted GPA. I got a B in PreCalc. It's really hard!

In the AP category i have so far Taken two AP tests, Euro History and English Language, I got a 4 in history and i am sure ill get a 4 or 5 in English; i just took it today.

For EC's. There aren't many, but they're all very worthwhile. I am a member of Leo's Club, a subsidiary of Lion's Intl. I am also a ranking member in the club "Students Together Against Alcohol 'N Drugs" ( STAAND ). Thirdly, I am a staffer/assistant to California State Assemblyman Juan Vargas. He's running for congress, so hopefully it will be Congressman Juan Vargas. My crowning achievement will be that I am attending the American Legion Boys State this summer, and if I do as good as I know i will, I will move on to Boys Nation. Also, I will be the Founder/President of my high school's Political Union for next year.

I am also nearly fluent in Spanish, i will probably be once i get back from Mexico in the summer.

I know Yale looks for those students with potential for growth, and potential to do great things.

I will also be an ROTC Student as Yale is really expensive.

So, what do you think?
So, what do you think?

You sound a bit overconfident. Two pieces of advice:
1. If you go to Boys State with that attitude (I went last summer), no one will like you, you won't be voted Governor, and you won't go to Boys Nation.
2. Don't let your Yale application sound anything like this - if any hint of arrogance comes through, you are finished.

thanks, but don't worry. I'm really not arrogant at all. I think. I don't really have room for arrogance. I'm just really good at English, that's why I think ill get a 4 or 5.

LOL, he's not worrying, just trying to help you out buddy. you should take some hints from him, he's already in

you're a good candidate with what you've presented. Noticeably absent are your test scores, which will obv be very important

hey fellow IB'er!
You'll do fine! It's good you're taking AP classes as well ,however I'd recommend taking more though maybe 4 more next year...don't worry though, you've got a pretty good bio...plus it sounds like you've got minority status/precedence!
Good Luck!!!

english --> grammar?
when you apply, proofread your essays (actually, your entire application) before you submit them :-P

it sounds like you're on the right track, but getting admitted to Yale also takes a bit of random luck... seconding what mr_sanguine said, it'd be helpful to know your test scores (though SAT scores aren't by any stretch of the imagination the absolute deciding factor in admissions). Have you already taken the SAT or the PSAT? How did you do?

thanks for catching the grammar problem. I've taken the new Psat and recieved a 1980. I'm taking the SAT in June.

well...your legacy sure will help. cool summer plans!

btw how much does legacy count relative to other ivy leagues? i heard it can really work in your favor for princeton, but hardly carries any weight at all for cornell..is this true?

Personally, I have no idea. I'm not even sure if it will help for me at Yale.

Cornell definately took a legacy from our school. He was less than qualified, so he sure as hell didn't get in on merit alone.

Yeah, Cornell is very nice to its legacy applicants.

"I got a B in PreCalc. It's really hard!"

Ahem...what grade are you in?
It is hard to predict your chances from what you have posted. I would say the stats are not bad. At the same time they give AdCom no reason to admit you. Just bear in mind that thousands of applicants with much higher credentials are rejected each year.

"I know Yale looks for those students with potential for growth, and potential to do great things."

They do. If you want to stand any chance of being admitted, think hard of how to convince them that you have it. Because your stats so far do not give any hint of that.

Overall, your legacy status must help. Otherwise, work hard. 4s on APs is not something to be extremely proud of. What your stats lack right now is uniqueness. No "hook" so far. Give them a reason to admit you. Or else they won't.

I do not want to discourage you. You have a fair chance of being admitted given that you work very hard both at school/Ec and on your application. I advise you to open your eyes on how many applicants with your stats do not get in, and try hard to ensure that you differ from the crowd in some unique way.

And good luck!

as is harvard. and basically all the other ivies. surprisingly though, yale rejected two legacies from my area, but accepted me although i have no ties to the school whatsoever. works for me :)

I'm a Junior right now. Why? Is PreCalc low for a Junior?

Would it help if I added some sort of Sport? I know Yale's hockey team isn't really the best team in the Ivy League. I believe it might be the worst. I play hockey for a club in San Diego; we went 24-1-0 last season.

Is anybody on this board on the Hockey team or have attended a game?

The hockey games are great fun. Ingalls rink, designed by the famous Eero Saarinen, is a fabulous place to watch a game. Even though Yale has not had the best teams recently, the players are still extremely talented. I would be surprised if the level of play in San Diego could measure up to the current team standards. Note, however, that next year's basketball captain was a walk-on who had very little playing time in his first three years, and will probably have not much more next year.

I see someone paid attention to more than just the game. :)
