I just have few questions that I wanted to ask in order to clear up some things about Cornell and to gain more information. Although I thought interview was for every RD applicants (I got it 4 days after 1/1 submission) , I am hearing that Cornell "screens" its interviews - meaning they pick only selected batch of applicants who are the most promising?

I have always loved experimenting with plants (4yrs of my high school sci fair). I ultimately want to deal with increasing yield specifically for people in third-world nations. Would this "profession" qualify as environmental engineering or horticultural science? I personally thought it was environmental engineering and so I wrote a supplement for College of Engineering.

Also, if I was wrong about environmental engineering/ horticultural science, am I allowed to switch from Cornell's College of Engineering to CALS? If so, do you think asking this would look bad during my interview this friday?

For most of Cornell’s colleges, having or not having an interview means nothing. It all depends on the availability of an alumni interviewer near you. 4 years ago, I didn’t get an interview and asked for one at one of Cornell’s local events. Cornell promised to get me an interviewer. No one ever contacted me but I was accepted anyway.

Interviews except for a few schools at Cornell are largely informational. If you are asking can you change your application from CoE to CALS now, that would be a no. If you are asking if you could change once you got to Cornell, you can. I don’t know exactly how it is done and how frequently. Other threads have addressed this issue–sounds like it is a bit bureaucratic to do, but not impossible. I think someone said their tour guide mentioned that about 10% of students transfer colleges.

I wish that were true about the interview but here is what Cornell says about it.

Interviews:
For applicants to the School of Hotel Administration and to the architecture program in the College of Architecture, Art, and Planning, a formal interview is required for admission. Applicants to the art department in the College of Architecture, Art, and Planning also are encouraged (though not required) to have an interview. Submit an online request for the School of Hotel Administration or the College of Architecture, Art and Planning to schedule a required interview. Though Cornell offers applicants the opportunity to meet with Cornell alumni, formal interviews are not required for any other undergraduate programs.

Right, “for most of Cornell’s colleges,” interviews are not required and are informational. The post was about engineering and CALS, neither of which require an interview.
