Aspiring Trauma Surgeon

What undergrad degree should an aspiring trauma surgeon acquire? I know that they can major in anything so long as they complete the pre-med requirements, but is there a specific degree that current med students or physicians wish they would have taken as undergrads? (I.e. Orgo chem, biochem, etc)

I would bet that most of them wish that they had done a less “practical” major or something more humanities based, because it’s really the only opportunity to do so before med school

Does undergrad really help that much in med school? I mean, there are obviously the premed requisites, various chem classes, etc, but if we aren’t actually going into research, then almost everything a surgeon would need for a successful career they’ll learn in med school and not undergrad, right?

The only pre-med classes you need for medical school are Intro to Biology 1, Intro to Biology 2, Intro to Chem 1, Intro to Chem 2, Organic Chemistry 1 and 2, Psychology, Sociology, Physics 1, and Physics 2. A very in-depth understanding of these subjects are needed to do well on the MCAT so that you can get into medical school. So yes, undergraduate does help with medical school, because without understanding the introductory classes, you will be completely lost in med school.

That is why most pre-med students choose to major in a science related topic. When they take upper level science courses such as Genetics and Microbiology, they are expanding their knowledge and reinforcing their basic knowledge.
