Aspiring writer?

I have a 3.0 GPA.

I am an XC runner (with times in the nineteens), will have twelve varsity letters upon graduation. That puts me as a strong contestant for DIII running. I am involved in 4-H since the age of seven, and am a state academic decathlon delegate. On top of that, I am taking an independent study that has me writing a novel by the end of junior year. I've shown dogs all my life, will be going to a writing camp this summer, and have a pretty extensive extra-curricular list. I achieved an 1880 on the PSATS (SATS will be taken in March). I am hoping to major in English, hopefully focus a little on creative writing. Does anyone know some safety, reach, and in-my-range schools? Or my chances on getting into any of the following?

I'm thinking about William Smith, Syracuse, Emerson, and Chapman.

I have about a 3.0 GPA, too. I’m also an aspiring writer and a 3.0 is really low. I only got into one school. It was for a specific writing program at SUNY Purchase. Obviously, Emerson is looking at your writing as well as your GPA. Are you applying general admissions for the other schools or for special writing programs? A good essay will be especially crucial for you, as well as good scores on the verbal section of your SAT.

Nice schools that should be reasonable choices- better if you get your grades up. Prep for the SAT. Your CR and W score should be good to make your writing interest credible.

About writing as a plus on your app: just writing isn’t enough. Have you had anything in print? School newspaper, lit magazine, local paper? Can you win some attention or award? Is your writing really good enought that an Engl teacher would rave in a LoR? All these are where the rubber hits the road. So, try.

Take a look at the course catalogs for these schools (online) to see whether the English and writing classes meet your interests. See if they have visiting writers or writers-in-residence who run seminars. Good luck.

I’ve gotten published online quite a bit (mostly teenink.com) Next year I am taking three AP courses and all level one classes with the exception of math. I will be doing an independent study writing about education in america and will be working with a teacher to get my articles published. I am hoping to get the gpa up any good safety schools to recommend would be lovely!
