Assault/Harassment thread

This was something my friend was saying was happening in the 2000’s, not the 80’s

Finally read Salma Hayek’s story. How horrifying! It’s amazing that she got the movie about Frieda Kahlo made considering how Weinstein was basically using it to try to get her in bed. Ugh…

One can invite attention, though. And be unpleasantly surprised when it occasionally turns out to be unwanted and abusive.

At 71, she should have told the ‘me, too’ crowd to suck it up.

We keep hearing men lament that “the sexual revolution is over”, but I say this is the goal of the Sexual Revolution - women are in control of their bodies and the own sexuality. They get to say Yes and they get to say No.

And catahoula, you are wrong. Suck it up.

So all the “me too crowd” has invited all this “attention.” Your victim blaming is exactly why this crap is perpetuated. Not a word out of you on men who can’t or won’t control themselves in the vicinity of a woman who is dressed in some particular way. Yep, they asked for it.

And once again, her age is irrelevant. 71 or 55 or 20, she is part of the problem and needs to own it.

Apparently there’s a slew of lawmakers who are serial harassers and the story just hasn’t broken yet. I guess journalists are corroborating stories right now. Apparently this is also one of the reasons the rush for tax bill because we will see more resignations.

A female candidate has dropped out of a race for Congress. Andrea Ramsey (D) Kansas. She had sexually harassed a man according to a 2006 lawsuit. It’s in the Kansas City Star.

“Apparently there’s a slew of lawmakers who are serial harassers and the story just hasn’t broken yet.”

@partyof5 - I’ve been reading those same rumors, too. If they’re true, there will be more forced resignations (lawmakers from both parties) in the weeks to come. Should be interesting.

The Daily Caller has a story that Senator Carper from Delaware slapped one of his wives hard enough to give her a black eye. Apparently, he admitted this in a deposition given in a custody dispute. Maybe he is one of the dominoes to fall.

We should expect that far more Republican congress members will be accused than Democratic members. Most likely Democratic men and Republican men are about equally likely to be accused, but a third of Democrats in Congress are women. Only a tenth of Republicans are women.

“Most likely Democratic men and Republican men are about equally likely to be accused”

I think they are about equally likely to commit this behavior. We don’t know yet whether female staff members from each party will be equally likely to speak up.

Put another way, I’m certain that the absolute number of sexual assaults is higher at Arizona State than at Brown. But Brown has more complaints – not just for its size, but overall. That’s the result of a different environment for accusers. Which congressional offices are more like Arizona State, and which are more like Brown?

Variety has an article today where director Peter Jackson (Hobbit, Lord of the Rings) says Miramax told his team that Ashley Judd & Mira Sorvino were a nightmare to work with. At the time, Jackson had no reason to question Weinstein’s intentions.

Jackson says, “In hindsight, I realize that this was very likely the Miramax smear campaign in full swing. I now suspect we were fed false information about both of these talented women — and as a direct result, their names were removed from our casting list.”

Not sure what the basis that one party will have more harassment charges over the other is. The GOP was accused of waging a “War on Women”, but the side that supported women seems to have been waging their own war.

NPR, progressive radio which champions causes for women, has how many employees leave for sexually harassment.

This isn’t a problem for just one side of the political aisle. I don’t get how we seem to let congressional members who are lawyers, get to plead ignorance for not following the laws that they have passed for the rest of us.

Also Russel Simmons has started a new hashtag, #NotMe. This is where he will defend himself.

I’m torn on the Kansas woman that dropped out of the race, unless there are several people who said she harassed them I at least think an investigation is in order. There seems to be a rush to guilty because there was a settlement and many times that means nothing. It’s just a way to keep your legal bills down.

They have a lot more men in Congress, so they have a lot more potential offenders.

@Midwest67 – interesting about Peter Jackson, and I’m glad he spoke out. It validates what’s been written about Judd and Sorvino, that their careers stalled likely as result of Weinstein’s revenge.

Yup, nasty business. Affects your ability to feed yourself and your family. Weinstein is scum.

As a rule of thumb, I’m going to assume that any guy who uses #NotMe is guilty. Just as a first guess.

And, given the sad condition of human nature, some are undoubtedly saying something else entirely today. The chances of every one of today’s accusers being completely truthful is nil.

Rather than point out that “blaming the victim” is a argument incapable of considering nuance, I’ll bow out. Good luck with the long-term consequences of heading out each day with a torch and pitchfork…
