Assault/Harassment thread

He denies it all.

Surely an investigation can pinpoint the house that the party took place in, who hosted it, and from there, find out who attended. Didn’t Kavanaugh say he was never at the party, or was that a misquote?
Who did Ford attend the party with?
Kavanaugh?

Seems to me that Judge not being compelled to testify is strange, though on the other hand I can see that he is up against what Ford is. Having your life put under a microscope in the press, then possibly facing charges if he/she is found to have lied. Seems like a lot to put on the line for nothing in return.

Kavanaugh…it’s easy to see what he gets out of all this.

Tough position for the FBI to be in. They had already reported to Congress that there was insufficient basis for an investigation of the allegations. I guess they can try again, but a 36 year old party is hard to recreate. I’m certain there was more than one of them that spring.

How is the house going to be ‘pinpointed’? Search every house in the area? What area? Find those with pools, but only those who had pools in 1982. Then find the 1982 owners? Parents were not there. The house may have been demolished or completely redone. Maybe they should interview all those in that area who were teenagers back then.

With all this publicity plus the 6 previous FBI background checks. If any new people knew anything they would have contacted the FBI already.

No surprises…he has been investigated numerous times. It would be surprising if the FBI hasn’t already gone back to high school…they do for many clearances and investigations. Plus this isn’t a criminal investigation…that would be Maryland’s jurisdiction and investigation.

Kavanaugh says it never happened and Judge says he never saw it happen. Neither of them have to say another word even if they are forced to admit to underage drinking…

I hope she pulls it together and lays it out on Monday if she’s remembering the right guys…Surely she should be able to dredge up the when and where even though she says she had s drink also. There’s got to be a reason her social media was scrubbed so I am afraid if she stalls and there is an investigation she’ll be eaten alive by her own past. If her entire desire was to prevent him from becoming a Supreme Court Justice she needs to stand up on Monday and be believable and finish what she started. No one did her any favors by burying her original letter in the fbi file as the clock ticked down. If she’s a no show he will get the nod very quickly I predict.

According to the Washington Post, Ford said that she told no one about the incident until 2012, and states the therapist was mistaken in writing down some of the details she recounted then (The number of boys in the room). I can’t figure out who more could be interviewed. If she didn’t talk about it, and he says it never happened, where can an investigation go? Maybe they can confirm they both attended a party. Not much.

It’s actually a lot to have two extra witnesses (the friend and the later therapist). Most cases like this don’t even have that.

I wish this could proceed without it becoming a vicious circus for all involved. The senate clearly doesn’t want to subpoena the friend who literally wrote a book about teenage drunkenness. He will be a terrible “character” witness no matter what. POTUS is a teetotaler and doesn’t like drunkenness either.

Hopefully some kind of LE can try to ascertain some facts, as they would during a background check. It doesn’t have to be a full criminal investigation.

@57special Judge isn’t being asked to testify because the party controlling the hearings doesn’t want him to. It would be pretty darned embarrassing for him to be confronted with some of his own writings. And asked whether the reason he can’t remember is that he was too drunk. And he risks perjuring himself.

The police investigate murders older than this. It’s not like there is nothing to look for and no one to talk to. Unless that’s what you want, of course. Then just throw up your hands and whisk St Brett off to his seat on the bench.

Seriously, does anyone actually believe that the people trying to stop this process care a whit about a 36 year old unverified and unprovable accusation from a party at an unknown time, at an unknown house, with a bunch of teenagers who were drinking (including the accuser)? No. They don’t care one single bit about whether this man is guilty or innocent of anything, they just want to stop the process until the next election, and then they think they will have the votes to stop it. That’s why they want an investigation instead of the accuser to testify. They want to delay the vote. Anyone who is pretending that is not the truth is being disingenuous or fooling themselves.

Now I don’t particularly support this nomination to the court, because I don’t trust a conservative court not to limit a woman’s right to choose. But I can see the obvious truth. It’s about delaying as long as possible, certainly not a man’s character. Next they’ll be finding witnesses in preschool claiming that Kavanaugh stole their binky. :open_mouth:

Agree bus and sad to say now she’s just being used as a bargaining chip and it is moving away from her story and just turning into a stall tactic. Really so sad it is turning to be that instead of a genuine outrage over what was allegedly done.

There is no pattern evidence from Kavanaugh’s life. We have statutes of limitations for a reason. Ford’s allegations of events 36 years ago should not be entertained. Period.

It’s always so interesting to see who finds attempted rape acceptable as long as it only happened once, the victim was drunk and it was a long time ago.

And now I’m sure all the people attempting to minimize it will say they don’t find it acceptable. At least my eyes get a great work out with all the rolling.

I don’t think people are saying that. At least I am not. I do not find attempted rape acceptable period, no matter under what circumstances it occurs.

I do find lying for political purposes to be unacceptable as well. I think she is a liar. In any event, after 36 years there is no way to know for sure. Her chance to complain was 36 years ago, or at least during any of the previous 6 investigations of Kavanaugh (his nomination to the Second Circuit was stalled for three years 2003-2006 - that might have been a good time, even though late).

Her allegations should not be entertained today.

No one finds attempted rape acceptable, @mom2twogirls, and it is insulting to suggest that anyone does. The nature of the incident doesn’t change the length of time passed or lack of corroboration of the alleged crime, or the complaintant’s apparent unwillingness to now testify. I don’t even support Kavanaugh, but there are serious problems with the allegations. Ford made the allegations to both the Senate, and on a Washington Post tip line, in July, so to claim she can’t testify now lacks credibility. The investigation, if any, would not affect her testimony.

If it makes you feel better, @mom2twogirls, I think most people would feel the same way on this issue even if the alleged victim was male, or if the alleged crime was of a different type-attempted larceny, for example. The fundamental problems with lack of evidence, passage of time, and faulty memories remain.

It is troubling that some here are saying this women is being used as a bargaining chip or a means to delay this process. It may also be that while she kept quiet for all these years, she felt she had to speak up when the nomination is for a lifetime appointment to the supreme court. While some may say one side is trying to stall, others may say that the other side is trying to rush this through due to fear of a new congress.

It is also plausible that someone who is a fine upstanding person got way too drunk one night when he was 17 and tried to assault a young woman. He may not remember because he was black-out drunk. He may never have done this again. Is that enough to keep him off the court? Were some of the allegations made over the past year enough to have people lose their jobs?

I can also see why she might be reluctant to testify in public when we think back to the last time a woman accused a nominee of inappropriate behavior.

MODERATOR’S NOTE:
I’ve deleted several posts, and may, when I have more time, delete a few more. Let’s keep on topic. Discussing allegations against Brett Kavanaugh is fine. Discussing certain Senators’ attempts to block his confirmation or comparison with past confirmation processes is not.

Senate offered she can testify in private. She still won’t. What is the nature of the “attempted rape”?

I agree, it’s always insulting when people excuse and minimize rape or attempted rape when alcohol is involved.
It happens in CC and IRL every time alcohol is involved.
It is insulting when people say incidents from decades ago shouldn’t matter. That happens frequently too.

It is insulting when we have no evidence of a victim lying but people still call her a liar, even when we’ve seen examples of the accused having lied, and evaded answering questions.
