Assault/Harassment thread

I don’t think the death threats she has gotten (and could anticipate, given how women are usually treated when they speak up), were a big incentive to come forward. Or looking back at how Anita Hill was treated. We’ve got one harrasser on the court now. Let’s stop at one.

She may truly believe it herself. Wasn’t this retrieved through some sort of repressed memory therapy? But it is naive to think that women don’t lie about lots of things, including sexual assault. Remember, UVa Jackie? Crystal Magnum? (OK, she didn’t have anything to lose), but UVa Jackie did. She is no longer in school.

I do believe her, intparent. I just don’t think the action is disqualifying, and I believe him, too, when he says he can’t remember. The likely female nominee is Amy Barrett, who is far worse for abortion and women’s rights than Kavanaugh. Be careful what you wish for, again.

What consequences is she going to suffer? She lives and works in Palo Alto. Her field is about 95% vehemently anti Trump, especially where she lives.

Anita Hill is a professor at Brandeis and has lucrative side gigs as an of counsel attorney last I checked.

I suspect that the “death threats” are just hooey. She supposedly didn’t want her name to get out there but she just happened to get a lie detector test and hire a lawyer months ago.

I don’t believe her memory came out of some “repressed memory therapy”; it came out during couples counseling with her husband.

It irritates me that some women think women are some sort of special type of human being. That they should always be believed because they must be a victim. That women are some sort of angel beings who can do no wrong. Until that type of mindset is banished, women will never be seen as equal. Women must be held to the same standards as men. Women must toughen up and not hide behind the “I’m too traumatized to submit to tough questions about these allegations” statement. For anyone to say that ‘she must be believed because she is a woman’ is demeaning to women.

@waitingmomla -

Can you direct me towards the letter from 200 women in support of Kavanaugh’s character.? The ones that I saw links to were letters supporting the accuser’s character.

Hooey? https://www.newsweek.com/kavanaugh-accuser-christine-blasey-ford-forced-out-home-after-death-threats-1127334?amp=1

Seems in today’s climate it’s ok to call people liars and blow off threats as “hooey”. What happened to civility and decency? (No need to answer- rhetorical question). This is why the old political thread got closed. Be respectful, folks.

I’ve seen nothing about “repressed memory therapy”. And I’ll say as someone who has been assaulted, the physical feeling and who did it is seared in my mind. I can’t tell you the date or day of the week, but there are many other details that are unforgettable 40 years after the fact. To me, this sounds the same.

I can’t post a link (I think due to TOD), but there is a letter on FB from a woman who was in the class ahead of her in her HS, and said the story went around among the girls at the school when it happened.

I saw that letter too @intparent, but it’s from a woman who had asked Mark Judge to some dance and he didn’t show up. That will brand her as a disgruntled ex or something.

The only evidence of “death threats” so far is what Ford’s own lawyers have said. I’ll wait until some facts come out from any investigation of such threats by the FBI or at least local law enforcement. Until then, it’s just a self serving statement by her attorneys.

I wonder how many death threats Kavanaugh is getting?

Also, people should understand that believing this woman’s story is tantamount to calling Kavanaugh a liar. He has offered to appear under oath to address the allegations publicly next Monday. At least so far, it appears that Ford is playing games.

@TatinG - can you please provide a link to where it was reported that this report followed repressed memory therapy.

Since when is a ‘misspent youth’ equivalent to sexual assault?

And people wonder why women are hesitant to report things like this. Good grief.

Nothing definitive. I’ve just seen articles suggesting that the memory came back through repressed memory therapy. The name of the therapist, to my knowledge, has not been revealed so the type of psychotherapy she underwent is unknown.

It was couples’ counselling not repressed memory therapy.

So now Ford’s attorneys are being accused of lying, @SatchelSF ? Please.

Talk about hooey.

If you’ve “seen articles” claiming it was repressed memory therapy, please link them. Repressed memory “therapy” fell out of favor (for lack of a better word) quite a while ago.

If we are going to go with a psychologist’s or psychotherapist’s notes, Ford and her husband should waive their privacy rights with regard to those sessions.

Until then, there is no reason to give any credence to any alleged notes, which in any event apparently do not name Kavanaugh and are inconsistent with her current story.

This all should have happened months ago, but it was more convenient to sandbag the process at the 11th hour.

Well she didn’t “report” anything - she sent an anonymous letter…there’s a big difference between reporting something to the proper authorities and telling anonymous tales to another person and worse yet anonymous tales 35 years later…let’s face it, it wasn’t like she was terribly upfront about this to begin with. Another reason why I really wanted her to be tough, be firm, be full of conviction and show up on Monday. Right now she feels pretty squishy. My feelings are if anyone - man or women - is going to lob a 35 year old grenade at another person they have an obligation to be forthright and upstanding and not squishy. If she got “played” by anyone, she should be screaming from the rooftops about that, too. Of you just fold, politely say you’re not going to play the game and go home like Franken waving your middle finger on the way out…there is no “squishy” middle ground. It’s all or nothing. She might be a heavily credentialed academic in charge of her classroom but she’s playing with the political big dogs now and they make a career of stuff like this. Optics…it’s all about optics.
