Thanks so much! So if a school does use the profile it will say so specifically?

I know that the CCAD site had a supplemental form for income verification, but I got the impression that it was just to clarify income sources. It didn't mention non-custodial parent information.

I ran some rough numbers through an EFC calculator earlier today...although on income I was basically just guessing because it has varied so wildly over the years. I couldn't even get my husband pinned down on a number...just a vague ballpark figure. But I tried it with and without the market value of the farmland and the difference was perhaps $800.

One thing I thought was odd though. Just for fun I tried putting ONE college student down instead of two and got a LOWER EFC than with TWO college students. What's up with that?

Mary Mary...you need to check the financial aid websites of EVERY college you kids are applying to. The deadlines for filing AND what needs to be filed are clearly listed on these college websites. The schools(s) will tell you what forms to file (FAFSA/Profile/School form/taxes, etc) and the deadline by which they MUST be received.

That's odd....did you change anything else?

No, didn't change anything else, just the number of college students. I thought it was really weird. I tried it several times. Maybe I'll do the same with a different calculator and see what it says.

None of the schools we're considering use the profile at all, so we won't have to provide non-custodial parent information. I AM hoping that if it comes down to them needing a co-signer then their dad will co-sign for them if I can't.

I have a nephew who was unable to continue with college because he didn't have anyone to co-sign his loans.

No but Cleveland Institute of Art uses it's OWN financial aid form. Very often schools that use their own finaid form ask for the same info as the Profile...including non-custodial parent info. You need to check what is required on that form.

Mary Mary, if your kids only need to borrow a few thousand over & above their financial aid awards you might want to reconsider using a co-signer. If a parent applies for a PLUS loan and is turned down, the student can borrow an additional $4000 unsub Stafford ($5000 for juniors and seniors). I would hope they aren't considering borrowing more than this, anyway ... because they'll probably have the full $5500 in Stafford loans as it is. If they are borrowing more than $9500 freshman year, you might want to reconsider their school choices. If they borrow the maximum each year, that really adds up!!
