Wondering if anyone has insight on academic advising. Although, first year D, hasn’t officially declared a major, she did indicate interest in a BS in a science major, her degree audit already shows that major and what requirements are needed to complete it. Her assigned academic advisor is a music professor, odd choice in my opinion…Is this normal or another case of the school being over taxed with too many students in the class of 2022. I don’t think she would even realize this is an issue. Butt out or recommend she get a new advisor? Thoughts?
My daughter is a psych major and has a history prof. as her advisor. I believe once they declare their major later in, they switch them to an advisor within their major. I think their advisor is also the person who teaches their first year seminar…I know my son, at a different college, was a finance major and his freshman advisor was a music professor!
If your D is interested in a health profession, have her reach out to the pre-health office if she has any questions.
In fact, reach out just to make contact and let them get to know her.
Thanks for the feedback. First meeting went fine so she’s just going to see how it goes. Not too many big decisions to be made at this point since classes have already been picked. Good idea to reach out to pre-health advising.
Just wondering how this worked out. A premed major with a music advisor. I am thinking of premed and am not musically inclined. this would be a hard sell for me.
@tripleomega The OP hasn’t been on CC since August. Also when a student formally declares a major he/she will be assigned a permanent advisor who is a prof. in that major.
@tripleomega Although not completely decided on major, guidance from advisor for second semester was in the direction of humaniities not science/math and also trying to steer D toward BA vs BS (even though D’s current grades and interests still support BS in major). As stated in previous posts, once major is declared D will get advisor in that major but would think the logical initial advisor would be more in-line with D’s indicated major.
