Can someone enlighten me on how studios are assigned for voice students at the more selective schools? My son is applying for his BM in Voice-Performance. Thanks so much.

I dont have a wealth of experience, but I’ve just been through the process with my son. For some schools (Julliard, MSM, Peabody, for him) - you list the teachers you prefer on your audition form. Those teachers listen to your audition, and if they like you as well, you will be accepted into that teacher’s studio upon admission. Other schools, you do not list teachers and give just a general audition to the school. Then, either the teacher makes a decision based upon that audition and you find out immediately, or there is another “audition” or selection process in the fall in which matches are made.

That being said, my S did not like the idea of taking “potluck” for teachers so for each of the schools he auditioned at, he took sample lessons and/or was introduced by his private voice teacher and had an “understanding” with several teachers before his admission audition. Doing this also helped him choose his school based upon the teacher, and caused him to cancel several auditions after his “favorite” teacher accepted him.

Others will probably know about other schools - my S just applied to a few.

The process varies tremendously from school to school and may even change from year to year at the same school. Usually the best way to find out is to call the voice department at each school where he has been accepted.

Thank you, Megpmom and Bassdad. We always hear how important the connection with a teacher is. Leaving it to chance seems unnerving. Then again, how often do we assume we know what’s best, and it turns out to be all wrong, yet the decisions we leave to others with more experience and knowledge turn out to be blessings?

I go to Lawrence and everyone I know who requested a specific teacher for their instrument (which would be limited to violin, piano and voice cause everything else only has one studio) got their pick. I guess this doesn’t really help if you aren’t looking at Lawrence, but as BassDad said, it varies from school to school so I can’t really tell you anything for other places.
