Assist.org - additional approved courses vs. courses required for major

My community college advisor told me that to be admitted to UCI with TAG I only have to finish the courses listed in assist.org under “courses required for the major.” Is that right? I don’t need to worry about the section that has classes under “additional approved courses for the major?”

I also have a second question, sorry for the double-post. I was enrolled at UCSC for a quarter, but I withdrew (all Ws on my transcript). Does that mean I’m not “in good standing” at UCSC and my TAG (for UCI) will be rejected?

It depends on your major. For example, it doesn’t list it on assist.org, but if you’re applying for computer science, you need to complete at least one of the classes under “additional approved courses”.

if you received all Ws on your ucsc transcript, that doesn’t mean you’re not “in good standing” at ucsc. You’re only in academic probation at UCSC if your GPA dips below 2.0, W doesn’t affect your GPA, so you’re good.

Additional approved courses may not be required for admission, but are probably graduation requirements. If you do not take them before transfer, you will probably have to take them after transfer, possibly delaying graduation, or at least limiting the amount of space you have for upper level electives inside or outside of your major.

@Mn9189 your advisor is correct. And you are in good standing at UCSC.

@pham98 that is not accurate re TAG and I only mention it because I don’t want to lead TAG applicants astray. (You might be mistaking an either/or required programming course with the bottom “approved” list.)

Thank you.
