Associates...Accounting or Finance?

Hey, guys. Looking for a little advice.

I'm currently going into Respiratory therapy, but I've recently gained an interest in business. I'm looking to get an Associates in either Accounting or Finance. Would it be beneficial to choose one major over the other if I'm only going for an associates degree? Also, what jobs would be available to me, for each major, with only an associates?

Why not go for a Bachelors degree?

I guess I should. It's just that I'm already 25 and I've only completed one year of school.

An associates in finance could land you some lower level banking jobs. Don't expect to be making trades for any large corporation though. A two year degree in "accounting" is more like "bookkeeping."

A two year degree will teach you technical skills but very little conceptual ability. It's more like being trained for a job. National firms probably wont look at 2 year degrees unless you have mega prior experience.

I'm not saying it's impossible to do big things, but even a bachelors is pretty standard these days.

A two year degree in accounting is virtually worthless. It's already pretty competitive for bachelors degree holders in accounting for the better accounting jobs. You need a good GPA with a bachelors in accounting to get the good CPA firm and private industry jobs out of college.

I would advise you to go for a bachelors if you're going to go that route anyway. Otherwise, forget about an associates. You're better off doing nothing instead or going for a different field.

Your age doesn't change the fact that you will receive a much higher return on your investment if you go for a bachelors.

Thanks for the advice. I've decided to go back for my bachelors. I'll be attending the Fox school of Business at Temple University.

Would going to school on a part time basis be frowned upon by future employers? I am older so I pretty much have to keep my full time job. I will probably be taking about 12 credits a semester.

As far as work eperiece, what would you recommend? Manage a small bar or get a job at a bank as either a teller or customer service rep? I figure if I get a job at a bank I could advance and get some pretty decent experience. On the other hand, managing a bar doesn't seem to be too bad either. BTW, I already work at the Bar part time, so getting that job is already in the bank;)

I should probably mention that I plan on majoring in Accounting.

Jake

IMO, 12+ credits a semester is considered full time. If you can work a full time job at the same time, that would be considered a positive IMO.
