Ass't attorney general blogs against gay U Mich SGA prez

(CNN) -- For nearly six months, Andrew Shirvell, an assistant attorney general for the state of Michigan, has waged an internet campaign against college student Chris Armstrong, the openly gay student assembly president at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor.

Using the online moniker "Concerned Michigan Alumnus," Shirvell launched his blog in late April.

"Welcome to 'Chris Armstrong Watch,'" Shirvell wrote in his inaugural blog post. "This is a site for concerned University of Michigan alumni, students, and others who oppose the recent election of Chris Armstrong -- a RADICAL HOMOSEXUAL ACTIVIST, RACIST, ELITIST, & LIAR -- as the new head of student government."...

Shirvell made no apologies for his blog postings, which include a picture of Armstrong with "Resign" written over his face. The same picture also had a swastika superimposed over a gay pride flag, with an arrow pointing toward Armstrong.

Shirvell acknowledged protesting outside of Armstrong's house and calling him "Satan's representative on the student assembly."

glad to see that Michigan is pursuing legal action against him! can’t believe this guy is an attorney general!!

I just finished watching Anderson Cooper interview Andrew Shirvell. I was amazed. Dumbfounded even. Nauseous too. Although I agree that Shirvell has a right to disagree with the policies that Chris Armstrong supports (non gender specific dorms is the issue), when has it become ok to put a nazi swastika on someone’s face and call it "campaign tactics? Wow. Where is truth, justice and the American Way? This is a lawyer that works for the State of Michigan? Wow.

My family is going to the “March to Restore Sanity” on Oct 30th. Ok, I know it’s a comedic event, but I’ve got to make an appropriate sign for this one. Wow - I’m at a loss.

“I have no problem with the fact that Chris is a homosexual. I have a problem with the fact that he’s advancing a radical homosexual agenda.”

Yeah, of course .

Gee, wonder why Cox ever hired a nut like this? It seems that Shirvell was Cox’s assistant campaign manager, and the guy has been a virulent anti-gay crusader ever since he was in college, as well as an anti-abortion crusader.

Another good “Christian citizen”. Disgusting.

Bet the Michigan Alumni office cringes everytime he mentions how he is just a concerned Michigan alum. All I can say is Wow! He got a law degree? And passed the bar? And got a job? Such an embarassment to Michigan.

He got a law degree from a right-wing Catholic law school devoted to turning out anti-abortion warriors.

Imagine if the SGA prez were your son, and the hell that young man is going through due to a public official’s homophobic actions.

The hate that some self-proclaimed “Christians” spew never ceases to amaze me. I’m sure the young man is used to such tactics and is the stronger for it.

I don’t know how anyone could get used to being the target of such venom. I am happy, though, that the student body at Michigan was open minded enough to vote a gay and out person as SGA prez.

As a proud Michigan alum, I’m embarrassed to be associated with this guy. The lack of judgment and critical thinking is scary in a man who’s supposed to uphold justice.

Edit: and agree with NSM–glad to see that the students of Michigan have better sense than one ignorant alum.

Wow. Just wow. What a hateful guy. And why did he keep referring to campaign tactics? Anderson Cooper asked him that once but didn’t press the guy to answer that point.

Northstarmom - I had the same thought. This is clearly cyberbullying, and not just by anyone, but by an employee of the state attorney’s office - someone with power and authority. Scary for the kid. I hope he isn’t successful enough in promoting his hatred and anger toward this kid that someone actually does something harmful. This is so shameful…

How can somebody be “flagrantly promiscuous” with ONE other person? Does this fine civil servant and pillar of the church know what the word “promiscuous” means?

This is why I started marching in the local gay pride parade. I realized last year that our openly gay teens and young adults are still the targets of hatred and recrimination. I think it’s better than when I was young, but there seems to be a resurgence of hatred in the last couple of years.

This type of issue has nothing to do with the purpose of this website and there are many other web sites better suited to a full discussion of this topic.

SAY - We talk about all sorts of topics here. it is relevant, it has to do with a college SGA president. The admins may choose to move the discussion to another part of the board, so there is now reason to try to quell discussion of IMO is an important subject. Don’t discuss it if you choose not to.

Confidential to SAY: Go bite rocks.

I just saw the Anderson Cooper interview, and Shirvell is a closeted homosexual if I’ve ever seen one. He only hates the UM fellow because he wishes he could be as comfortable with his own sexuality.

Well, maybe it belongs in the Politics forum.

On the Anderson Cooper interview, Shirvell comes across as a cyberstalker who is taking things way way out of proportion. You have to wonder if his unhinged rantings are his way of keeping the closet door shut.
