Hey there guys, I know that C10 is a discovery course and should be easier than regular astro, but if anyone has any details on both these courses, please share. Thanks.

Easier? Based on what?

Just take the one with Fillipenko.

I think they are the same thing

Well discovery courses are much easier than non-discovery courses because they are intended for people who are not in that particular major, but want to take a course in the subject. The Astro C10 does not fit into my schedule, hence I opted for Astro 10 with Bloom, I think hes a new professor and not sure how he teaches, just wondering if anyone has taken Astro 10 compared to someone who has taken Astro C10.

Wasn't there a thread on Astro C10? I already got another e-mail from Fillipenko about joining the class and encouraging more to join. I'm super excited about the class, which is surprising because I'm not into any type/form of science...at all.

The courses that are discovery courses often existed at Berkeley before the title came to be, and still plenty of courses in departments are also intended for people not in the department's particular major. The title just highlights (and groups for easy access) the ones that many students find interesting and that are taught by popular professors which satisfy breadth requirements for students in the college of letters and sciences. Take philosophy of mind, phil c160t, and tell me how easy it is. :) Certainly somewhat less is required of you than the astro class that astronomy majors have to take, but that has nothing to do with it being a discovery course.

The only reason I asked what the difference was because I have taken discovery courses such as PFFP and tell me that wasn't an easy course because the professor is very knowledgeable, but compared to a regular physics class, this class was a breeze. So in terms of being "easier", I was asking along the lines of how each professor grades and the type of work that would be given between the two courses. I appreciate all your help and input, but I just decided to drop Astro 10 and pick up another course. Thanks all.
