ASU 2012 Dorm Discussion

DD was just accepted and is a possible Honors College admission. I would love to hear about Honors housing and non-honors housing options. Tell us what to avoid. Coming out of state from Texas. Thanks.

The first thing anyone will tell you is avoid Manzanita at all costs. It's old and has quite a few issues. I've heard of pipes breaking and ruining peoples stuff plus it's really known as the major party dorm. I don't know a whole lot about the Honors housing except that its really close to the MU(Memorial Union) and Hayden Library. I lived in San Pablo last year and it was really nice. San Pablo, along with Hassayampa and Sonora, are the newest dorms on campus. My advice is to look at where your classes will possibly be next year and choose your dorm based on that. You don't want to be in Sonora on the far south side of campus if most of your classes are going to be on the north side and vice versa.

Pretty much all of the freshman dorms besides the honors college are party dorms. Of those, manzanita and palo verde are the worst.

If your daughter is accepted into the honors college, I would highly recommend living there, you'll be in a community of people that you will likely get along with much better and your Human Event class will be a minute away from your dorm (required honors class for the whole freshman year that is held in classrooms around the honors college). If she is more of the party type then I would suggest Hassayampa as it is very new.

I love the honors dorms (Hayden, Best, and Irish) It's just a really nice, cosy atmosphere. The dorms are clean and generally not full of loud, drunk people.
Under NO circumstances should your daughter live in Manzanita. I was initally put there, and my friends made me switch...one said I would get a disease just from touching the elevators. That's a silly exaggeration, of course, but there is an element of truth there. Manzy is known as the STD dorm. Palo Verde Main, (as well as East and West) are also party dorms. Hassayampa is brand new and the rooms are suite-style (you have a roommate and two suitemates). I heard the suites are really awesome. It is the most expensive dorm, though.
I don't know much about the other dorms, but if you're considering Barrett, than the honors center complex would be the best option.
