I got accepted to both these schools with a good merit scholarship at each. Which school is considered better in general? Including honors colleges.

Well I plan on applying to ASU next year, so I will give you my opinion.

UofA is generally considered stronger overall, with ASU better in professional programs like journalism and business.

Also ASU's honors college, Barretts, is considered to be one of the best in the country. If you are accepted to the both honors programs, ASU is definately the better choice.

Also Tempe is a way better city than Tucson, and the U of A campus is disgusting, while ASU's is really nice.

ASU also has better food, hotter girls, and a better party scene.

I would agree with SoCal18's comments for the most part. However, I think the U of A campus is the more attractive, although less modern looking, butwhile U of A has more than its fair share of goodlooking people, I have never seen more attractive girls and guys in one place than at ASU. The campuses and student bodies have a definitely different feel, with a slightly more serious edge to the students at U of A. I don't think there is much question, if any, about ASU having the better honors college. Students at both schools seem very happy, although I think there is more school spirit at ASU.

We chose neither school, but if we did, my D would have taken U of A. The campus is laid out pretty well, ASU I felt was huge in comparison. Depends on what your interested in as well for a major.

I was a bit put off by the honors dorms at ASU. I didn't care for the chainlink barbed wire fencing surrounding the dorm. Now, I know there's probably several good reasons for it being there, but the impression it gave me was there was either a serious problem outside or inside the compound.

The "compound" :) now you see my impression.

Actually the dorms themselves in the honors college were very nice in a college dorm world comparison.

U of A honors dorms were just part of the regular campus life, absent of barriers.

I think you could get a good education at both schools. You should definately visit both.

The reason my D chose elsewhere? Green and trees. AZ doesn't offer alot of either, ya gotta like catus. I MEAN you really gotta like catus, that's all there is. :) If your a person who wants seasons and trees and occasional rainfall in your college experience, neither of these schools are probably going to a good fit. You have to live there 36 months out of the next 48.

Also it's a right to work state with a crap minimum wage for college kids. Prices for comsumer goods were the same in WA as they were in AZ with about a $3 difference in min wage (college kid wage) between the two states. If you're planning to work a bit for beer and pizza money, be aware of these things.

^^
There is actually going to be an increase in minimum wage after the latest ballot vote.
And it's been raining on and off here for 4 weeks straight! It even snowed for the first time in a few years last week where I live...
My sister stayed in the honors dorms, and had no trouble whatsoever. The campus offers a cab service for students late at night, and there are emergency phones scattered throughout the campus.

Green and Trees? Neither Tempe or Tuscon, but Tempe is WAAAY closer to all the nature spots. About an hour or two away from Tempe there's Flagstaff, Prescott, the Grand Canyon, Sedona, Jerome, so much to offer. Scottsdale (where I live) is a great city for shopping and club spots and only a 30 minute drive. About a 5-10 minute drive from Tempe are two HUGE malls (Chandler Fashion and Fashion Square) that are amazing (may not appeal to a guy, but hey!)

I stayed at UofA for a week, and although it does have a great layout, it doesn't offer as much 'social' life outside of the campus walls. I go to Tempe almost every other weekend, and it's really exciting and you're never bored! That's just my personal opinion. Both schools are great academically in terms of state schools, so just look at the major you're interested in, and see which program looks best to you.

So only honors kids can get near the honors dorms? I definately do like green stuff and occasional rain and realize i will have to give that up.

"ASU also has better food, hotter girls, and a better party scene."

i'm sold

no, my sister was NOT in the honors college, and stayed at Hayden...an honors dorm. Sometimes, they'll let you in if you request it. The honors dorms are exactly like any other dorms...

While ASU's business program is slightly better than UofA's, it's also much harder. You need like a minimum GPA of 3.5-3.6 to be considered for the program. I've been to both schools.

Academics- UofA- in some programs, ASU is better than UofA, but in terms of academic reputation as a whole, UofA is superior. ASU lets in almost everyone who applies but makes it difficult to get into certain programs once you are at the school. UofA is quite a bit more selective, but not nearly as difficult to get into the top programs. At ASU, you often have lower division classes with 600 people! If you are in the honors program, you would probably not be in classes of this size.
Campus: UofA- I liked both campuses, but UofA’s older brick buildings are very nice. They make you feel as though you are at a college with a lot of history. The facilities at both schools are outstanding. Both campuses are big, but ASU is huge (on almost 600 acres of land!)
Weather- UofA- at their hottest, there is still a noticeable difference between the two schools in terms of weather. Tucson is about 10 degrees “cooler” than Tempe.
Sports- UofA- there’s no doubt about it that UofA excels in basketball and has an improving football team. ASU’s basketball team is terrible, but their football team was pretty good this year (better than UofA’s)
People (I’ll divide this one into two categories)
Looks- ASU- the girl’s at ASU are the hottest I’ve seen at a college; they are even better looking than the ones at San Diego State. The girls at UofA are also excellent, but really can’t compare to the ones at ASU. The ugliest girl at ASU would be the hottest at University of Chicago or MIT.
Brains- UofA- while there are some who go to ASU for its excellent honors programs and generous scholarship offers, there are quite a few dolts at ASU. The students as a whole are more academically oriented at UofA. The mentality at UofA is “work hard, play hard”. There are people at ASU who think the reason they are going to school is to tan and get drunk every night.
Town- Tempe (ASU)- ASU wins in a landslide here. Tempe is one of the coolest college towns around. You are only about 10 miles (15 minute drive from Phoenix). There are so much to do in Tempe; great shopping, restaurants, bars – everything. Tucson is pretty much a dump. Right next to campus, there is 4th street which is where all the bars are located, but other than that, it’s not a college town at all. There is a lot to do on campus at both schools, but you don’t have a lot of outside options in Tucson. The restaurants are quite good in Tucson, but that’s about it. The police are really cracking down on off campus house parties at UofA, even using helicopters to find and break up parties.

You also have to consider the size of both campuses and the amount of personal attention you’ll be receiving. UofA has about 28,000 undergraduates, while ASU has about 51,000.

Both have their positives and negatives. I’ll leave it up to you to decide which school you like better. I would have seriously considered going to ASU if it wasn’t so big. As it is, I didn’t end up applying, but did apply to UofA.

... (10 char)

actually ASU's campus does have its fair shar of trees in the heart of campus

as an ASU fan my whole life........................

tuscon is a dump! it smells....theres nothing to do......... and tempe is a much better scene im quite bias tho

In arizona.... the more prestigious school is considered U oF A but Barretts at ASU is reeling in some of the smartest kids to come out of AZ

Id choose ASU

FOr me

I think the U of A campus is beautiful. And Tucson is not a dump^^.

To the OP, you ought to visit the schools yourself, because it only matters what YOU think. If you can't visit, read the Fiske Guide to get a feel for both of the campuses. In my research is seems that U of A has the better reputation overall.

tuscon is a dumb

i am so bias though..... my family has grown up hating U of A... so u must put my comments into perspective

Give Tuscon Back to Mexico!
im sry (common asu chant)
