ASU/Barretts - International Student - Urgent Help

ASU/Barretts - International Student - Urgent Help
Dear CC members ,

I am Indian . I intend to come to the US for higher education . I dream of studying at universities such as Stanford/UC-Berkley/UCLA for my undergrad but my grades and my especially my SAT score are not sufficient to get into these universities. My list now includes ASU (and Barrett's) which is a decent university for engineering . I want to know more about the university and especially about Barrett's. What are the facilities they provide to engineering students , how is the quality of education ? , how are the internships ?. What kind of a job I would get if I graduate from ASU ? and what kind of graduate admissions am i looking at ? (can I get into Stanford at least for my Graduate degree) , Finally , What will I be missing out on ?

I wanted to know my chances at ASU and Barret's and what else I would require in order to gain admission into both as an international freshman.

I know it is advised not to enter a college with a mind of transferring to other universities but I want to like ASU and make the most of it . I will try to transfer to my dream schools though.

It would be helpful of you people to suggest universities for me.

Intended School :-

Arizona State University and Barrets - Honors college

Intended Major :-

Mechanical Engineering/Electrical Engineering

Curriculum - CBSE (Indian , But the grades have been converted to the US GPA system by Josef Silny associates)

My Stats :-

Grade 9-11 - GPA 3.7
Expected grade 12 GPA - 4.00

SAT - 1060 (Math + CR)

Extracurricular activities :-

Social Chair - Grade 12, Prefect Grade 11 , Did 50 hrs community service , computer club , vice captain badminton team , a few debate competitions , Model United nations , a disciplined and well behaved student .

Admission to Barrett is going to be hard for you. The average SAT for incoming students last year was 1308.

Thank you for replying.

IS the SAT required for international students ?

[Resources for Students at ASU](<a href=“Home | ASU Global”>Home | ASU Global) <– you can e-mail admissions and ask your questions of them (do I need to take the SAT, etc.)

I want to say that first all, your chances at Stanford grad are NOT impacted by what undergrad university you attend. ASU - honors program or not - will give you a fine shot at eventually attending Stanford or ANY graduate program. It’s generally accepted that where you go for undergrad isn’t that important in terms of graduate school admissions, as long as you get good grades and test scores and are decently involved.

BUT: most engineering majors work for a couple years after graduating and have their EMPLOYERS pay for their graduate school. So, your employer may have a preferred college they want you to attend, and Stanford may be out of the question, anyway (for example, if you accept a job in New York - that’s being extreme, but just to get my point across - it’s unlikely they’ll send you to Stanford for grad school! They’ll probably want you in the area).

Look into University of Maryland and Ohio State University as well. I’m pretty sure both have good engineering programs.

But we need to know some more info: are you planning on going back to India to work? Or do you want a career in the states? If you want a career in the states that makes things really easy for you, because the name of your university essentially does not matter. If you do well - wherever you go - you will be guaranteed a great shot at many internship and career opportunities. Engineering is very employable and making sure you pick a university at which you will SUCCEED is more important than picking a university whose name looks good on paper. To that end, ask yourself if a large state university is for you, or if you’d prefer something more close knit? What type of environment do you work best in? What schools are known for giving good support? Etc.

* I. What are the requirements for admission?

The admissions process for Barrett, The Honors College at Arizona State University is very selective. With every incoming class, the Barrett admissions committee strives to create a dynamic and well-rounded group of scholars who will contribute to every aspect of the honors college community. Admitted students typically have superior grade point averages, impressive standardized test scores and submit a strong application essay. The admissions committee also looks for students who exhibit exceptional leadership qualities, special talents (musical, athletic, scientific, among others), interesting hobbies and avocations, unique personal achievements or life experiences, and significant community involvement.

There are no minimum GPA or test score requirements for admission. The Barrett application is quite comprehensive, allowing the selection committee to factor in the many different facets of each individual file. The typical transfer or continuing ASU student admitted to Barrett will have a cumulative college GPA of at least 3.60. For high school seniors, the average unweighted high school GPA for the Barrett fall 2009 incoming class was 3.84, with 75% ranked in the top 10% of their high school graduating class. The average SAT score (math and verbal sections only) was 1308 and the average ACT was 29.

Please note that the admissions committee always considers GPAs in the context of the program of study they were earned in. Also note that the above numbers are averages. A GPA or test score at or above the average is not a guarantee of admission, nor will a GPA or test score below the average necessarily prevent a positive admission decision.

^^

I think you will be accepted to ASU, but I don’t think that your stats are high enough for Barretts.

If you work hard and get top grades at ASU, there’s no reason why you couldn’t get accepted to Stanford. :)

Can you pay full-freight? Or, will you be needing some aid?

What other schools are you applying to?

I am planning to stay in the states after graduation. I want to live there and I am also aware of the low availability of work permits in the US. If in case , I do not get a work permit , i will move to Canada.

My parents can pay the full-freight.

My main aim now is to get an undergrad degree and then a graduate degree and get a very good job and then do a part time MBA. My dream Job Destinations are - California and NYC.

Thanks for the Help.

**BUMP …

Please help me out**

You seem to be fixated on Stanford. Why Stanford? Just because it’s a name you’ve heard of? The hierarchy of name schools is often seen as more important in Asia than it really is in the US.

For engineering, other schools you may want to investigate are U of Illinois, Purdue, Virginia Tech, Georgia Tech.

Think about “why” certain schools are your dreams. Because you know specifics about their programs that are of interest to you? Or because you have a general impression that these are the Very Best schools in the US and that every day of being on their campus is the most special day in your life? I fear your impressions are founded on prestige.

I agree with Pizzagirl. It seems as if you’re just chasing prestige.

This post made me laugh out loud. California and New York couldn’t be more different when it comes to climate, the kind of jobs they have and the overall atmosphere.

Right now, I think that you need to concentrate on getting accepted to a few good schools that have good engineering programs. There are many schools that are better or equal to Stanford for engineering for grad school, so there’s no point in fixating on Stanford right now :)

What are your individual SAT scores? M CR W?

With your stats, your choices are a bit limited for engineering schools, but here goes…

St. Louis U

Auburn U

Texas Tech

Clemson

Iowa

Iowa St.

The admissions criteria are the same regardless of where you come from with the exception that foreign students usually need to also prove competence in the English language. Therefore most US colleges/universities will require the SAT or ACT of every applicant.

You need to do research on your intended major and many US colleges. You are fortunate you can do a lot online. Start your research with rankings of colleges, especially in engineering. You may want to check some schools via the US News and World Report’s rankings to find schools with your test scores in their midranges. You should be realistic and choose schools that would be a good academic fit for you, ie schools you are likely to be accepted at. Many schools’ engineering programs are harder to get into than the school itself so an admission does not alwways mean getting into the engineering field you desire. It’s hard work but you are the best person to do the search, you will know when to follow leads and redirect your searching. Good luck.

For what it’s worth, we looked into Barrett’s for an engineering major, and did not find that it added much educational value. The Barretts’ small group honors seminars were in nonengineering topics. Your would take your engineering classes with students from ASU.

ASU and Barrett’s have ambitious plans for expansion, but the university took a big hit last October when the market crashed, and may have had to hold off or plan to raise tuition significantly. I suggest doing more research before you commit.

Thanks for replying.

I know that being an international , I don’t know much about the education in the US . I want to go and work in California (and build a house for myself in the Orange county ) … I know it sounds funny , but its my dream and I want to work towards it.

So , What are my options keeping in mind my grades. My aim is to earn money and I like automotive engineering. I have taken a job at a local industry , where I have learned how to fix cars.

According to my research , I would prefer Stanford over MIT . I like the vibe that Stanford provides. The courses are amazing , I like the campus and California has very good engineering firms and Stanford gives opportunities to each and every student to excel and Stanford provides attention to each and every student.

Where would you send me If I was your relative (Child/Sister…) … Keeping in mind my ambitions and my grades.

Where would i get world class opportunities , a very good education and a little bit of prestige ? (some thing Stanford/Berkley-esque … which means a combination of good education , good attention , very good internships , good location , a bit of prestige which is optional)

My SAT score is 1570 cumulative out of 2400 620M , 440CR , 510 CW

Please give me 3-4 universities where all my needs can be fulfilled.

Thank you

You should use the CollegeMatchmaker search engine at the College Board website to look for universities that offer the degree you want, and that admit students with your statistics:

[College MatchMaker - Type of School](<a href=“College Search - BigFuture | College Board”>http://collegesearch.collegeboard.com/search/adv_typeofschool.jsp)

You can include the specific kind of engineering program, the part of the country, your GPA and SAT scores, etc. and find a list of institutions that are good fits.

My SAT score is 1570 cumulative out of 2400 620M , 440CR , 510 CW

With your stats, you have choices, but maybe not the choices you were expecting. That said, I think that you should consider going to engineering undergrad at a school like Auburn, do well, and then apply to Stanford or USC (California) for engineering grad school.

Auburn University - strong engineering, but will accept you with your stats. Beautiful school. Reasonably-priced for non-residents [Auburn University](http://www.auburn.edu/)

Thanks a lot for your suggestions . If anyone else has an opinion about ASU or where I should be applying . Please help me out !

BUMP

You have this same post on 4 four forums - ASU, Parents, Chances, and College Search and Selection.

Pretty much everyone is giving you the same advice. You need to apply to other schools that have engineering that will accept your scores. Where else are you applying? :)

BTW…can your family pay for all of your college costs - about $32k -50k per year (depending on where you go)?

Should we guess that you’re a girl based on your screenname? If so, then you should also apply to schools like Texas Tech who might want more girls.

However, I still think that you should apply to Auburn. Good engineering, beautiful campus, fun activities.

I am applying to :-

ASU and Honors
University of Kansas
University of UTAH
Auburn

YES

Gender : Female

Kansas and Utah are not known for engineering. Why did you select those? I repeat, check out U of Illinois, Purdue, Georgia Tech, Virginia Tech plus other schools posters have suggested above.

You have never been to CA; how do you know your dream is to live there and Orange County specifically? I fear you are working off stereotypes of what life is like in the US.
