How difficult are the admission requirements to Barrett Honors? I’m planning on applying there this fall and the only reason I’d attend ASU would be if I was accepted into the honors college. I have a couple ECs but not really anything great, 3.5 UW, AP/IB classes, and a 2000 (610 writing, 700 verbal, 690 math) on the SAT. The site doesn’t seem to hint much towards what type of stats are good enough, so does anyone have info?

You have a really great shot. I know alot of kids with a little higher gpa but sats in the 1300's (old sats) that made it in. Of coarse they were in state applicants. But with your SATs I don't think you would have a problem.

Here is a link to compare yourself to current students

Business Guy, you should be good. They now look at essays and activities which can help a lot. My D got in with a higher GPA but only a 1320 SAT. She had great activities and leadership, and got a very nice scholarship, free tuition plus. Good luck

Thanks a lot you two, I worry most about my GPA but hopefully my SAT score can help offset that a bit.

Another thing, I'm an Arizona resident, how much weight does that carry?

a lot.

I'm similar stat's with a higher GPA and writing/reading scores but w/ lower math

I think we both have a decent chance -- I'm in-state too :)

My daughter just completed her freshman year at Barrett. She lived in the dorm and has been very happy with her college choice from day one. She made many new friends with other Barrett students and enjoyed the honors classes.

She graduated high school with an IB diploma, her (old format) SATs were about 1280, she was in the top 5% of her class with excellent ECs. I believe a key factor in her acceptance were the recommendation letters, she chose the teachers to ask for those very carefully. I hope this information will help you in deciding to apply to Barrett.

In Arizona the top 5%, per each high school, are offered generous scholarships at the state universities. As you probably already know, ASU gives scholarships and stipends to National Merit types. Most of the Barrett students are on full tuition "plus" scholarships.

Good luck in your college search and application process.

This thread is for new students/families to ask questions and for current students/families to share their experience at BHC

What does "really bad" mean to you? If you just aren't good at taking tests that's one thing, but if your aren't at the very top when it comes to class rank and GPA, you don't have much chance.

Your GPA and rank are decent, but almost everyone "goes to a very competitive high school" so that doesn't mean too much.

What were your test scores that you think are bad?

Yes in state will help, and you're still in the running with your SATs, but I would really try increasing that to at least a 1300 M+V. The average SAT of honors college students is 1320 currently, so try to get in that range for a good chance.
