ASU Honors College

Is Barretts Honors college a good school?

What is your definition of “school”? I bet its not what you get with Barrett. You’re probably thinking Barrett is akin to the College of Letters and Sciences or School of Engineering at ASU, providing its own majors and other attributes of a School that is part of a University. It’s not.

Barrett is best thought of as an enhanced ASU experience. Go to the page http://barretthonors.asu.edu/academics/advising/lower-division-requirements/</a> and read it, click on that chart to enlarge it. You can graduate from Barrett Honors with only 36 of your 120 units taken there. Depending on major you may be able to take more classes, but Barrett doesn’t offer upper-division classes for your major the way the School of Engineering or School of Journalism at ASU does. Instead you choose, as that web page helpfully points out, from any of the 250 ASU majors offered by the real Colleges and Schools on campus. You take most of your units elsewhere, you’ll be in upper division classes with the ordinary kids at ASU, and some of the “honors” classes are nothing more than the regular class with a special section that meets once a week for the honors kids.

There are certainly advantages to enrolling thru Barrett. They offer specialized counseling, the classes actually taught at Barrett will be by chosen faculty and you’ll be joined in class by the best students, there are scholarships and other perks just for Barrett students, they even have specialized dorms for Barrett students just like some schools provide for jocks or via themed houses.
