Ive been accepted to both schools for Computer science, and im wondering how they compare to each other? Is one better than the other or are they roughly the same when it comes to CS? Also any info on post graduate job opportunities? Thanks.
I would compare the two class requirements. Check out both of their major maps and compare. I will be doing Computer Science(Sftwr Dev) at ASU next year, so I would say ASU since they have a nicer campus and dorms, etc. I have been to UA before for camps and I was not impressed with the classes.
Um, how interesting that the above poster says the ASU dorms are nicer. Hands down, the UA campus is much newer and nicer. In fact, it’s stereotyped to have the students with more money. Two of the dorms (Likins and Arbol) are like deluxe hotels, and others are fairly new. The fitness center is new and I think it was ranked #1 by a nat’l survey. The facilities at UA are much more well-kept. ASU seemed run-down. My son chose UA for CS.
I talked to Mr. Google and we concluded that the two schools are very comparable. US News does not rank undergraduate CS. For graduate schools, they ranked UA at 40 in the U.S. and ASU at 48. They also do a global ranking, largely based on reputation. ASU ranked 65th; UA was unranked.
In a Great Affordable Colleges for Computer Science ranking, UA was 2nd and ASU was 3rd in the Southwest. In another listing of the 50 most innovative CS schools, ASU came in at 47th; UA was unranked.
In the Shanghai Global CS Rankings, ASU came in at 33rd in the world; UA was ranked in the 151-200 range.
I somewhat disagree with AnalMom concerning the two campuses. I have toured both campuses with my sons, including the engineering schools and honors college. UA does have a more compact, traditional looking college, while ASU’s campus is more like a big research/office park. I don’t know what the computer science departments look like. If you can get into ASU’s Barrett Honors College, it has better facilities than does UA’s Honors College. The new Arbol de la Vida Honors dorm is indeed very nice, but it does have common floor bathrooms for each sex. The Barrett Honors dorms are just eight-years old and the rooms are mostly suites with two rooms sharing a very large, nice bathroom with double sinks. Barrett also has its own cafeteria (best on campus), own quad, a great private fitness center, and nice lounges and class rooms. Barrett is actually gated off from the main campus and only Barrett students have access outside of normal school hours.
The new UA fitness center is indeed state-of-the-art. I have not seen the two ASU fitness centers.
ASU has cafeterias for student dining, plus restaurants. UA has no cafeterias; students can dine at one of many restaurants scattered around campus. There are a very large number of them in the Student Union located centrally on the Mall.
I like Tempe better than Tucson, but there are probably just as many that like Tucson better. Overall, you need to visit and tour the campuses and facilities to see which you like best.
