Also, is pre med at ASU good? Is there a high acceptance rate to top medical schools? Thanks!

What CC says is not always reality, but yes I believe that there was some obscure publication that listed U of A as a “public ivy”. The reality is that neither U of A or ASU is considered a peer of the Ivy League. That doesn’t mean that you can’t access all you need to get into the medical school of your dreams, it is simply a matter of prestige. ASU does send some students to top medical schools, but the average pre-med student at ASU isn’t of the same caliber as the average pre-med at say Harvard. Look at SAT/ACT scores and it should be clear that the intellect/motivation of Harvard students is greater on average. People tend to overvalue the role of college on a students ability to get into medical school on this board. What a school provides is resources for you to mold your application, you are the fire that transforms it into something notable.

If you’re planning to do Law, Engineering, or Business ASU is 1000000 times better than U of A in those areas. U of A is more advanced when it comes science. Although its nice to see which school is better, ultimately the wisest decision is going to be the school that you would personally like to be at for the next four years. If you went to Harvard but hated it there when you could’ve gone to ASU cause it was your dream school, it would have been completely pointless, at least I think so.

UofA acceptance has just dropped to 68.6% whilst ASU hit 88.9%, ASU applicants 29,722, while UfoA applicants grew to 32,227.

So the University of Arizona had more applicants but has a lower acceptance, SAT ranges are very similar, per the Ultimate Guide to American Colleges 2014. Didn’t see that coming, current seniors at my sons AZ HS going to UofA outnumber ASUbound students for the first time.

Link? That must be 2014 admission cycle data, very new, can’t find it in any news. That is extraordinary. For the previous 4 years: 2013,-12,-11,-10, checked CDS and every year UA got about 26,000+ applications. Huge year over year increase, if true. Did they send out free application offers?

I’m not aware of anything different this year, my guess right now is UofA is getting to it’s max number of undergrads for the freshman dorms #'s and they won’t add more, thus as more applicants apply the number of seats is not going to grow anymore and admissions rate drops.

UofA is being hit, according to contacts in ASUA (Student body) by increasing numbers of California student applicants, due to Cal schools not offering anything in the way of FinAid for OOS students, but mainly due to the difficulty getting into Cal schools and getting to graduate in 4 years whereas UofA and ASU do offer Merit to OOS students, around 25% of UofA Freshman are from California this year.

Anecdotal, My DS14 son was accepted to Honors at UofA bit will likely go OOS, of his 10 close friends all are going to UofA only his gf is going to ASU!, interesting!

Can you give a link to the data? That’s a 25% increase in apps in one year, when there was no trend of increases, totally flat app numbers the previous 4 years. Must be a reason for that.

I understand about going away. You are in Phoenix area, right? We are quite close to our state’s flagship and many kids really do like to go away for school. But there is only one ‘best’ school in our state, so good students who don’t find an attractive affordable option out of state often stay here, as it happens to be a fine school.

Englishman, about that acceptance rate. You were going to post a link to the new UA data about the staggering app increase this year, weren’t you? I know UA had a lower acceptance rate even before, but I would appreciate it if you could give a link to the current data.

What is MIP??

Honors housing ASU >> UA.

Minor in Possession.

I am interested in the link to the data as well. That was a significant change.

I added to @cjlawsons analysis for fun, please provide you own analysis…We all have an opinion mine, from 3 years of parenting a now UA junior

^^ That book was published in July 2013. I can’t see all of what is inside, only the Amazon preview, which does not have UA info. But based on date of publication, the most recent info would be 2013 admits. UA’s numbers were nowhere near that high in 2013 according to their CDS which says there were 26,481 freshman applicants that year. The book must have a typo, or something else funny going on.

Took a while but here’s some independent validation of the new U of A acceptance rate for 2014, surprisingly low for a large state university at 70%, apols I initially had it tagged at 69%. From discussions with the admissions office staff (student) they had additional apps from Intl candidates this year esp Asia and more in state students applying.
As a point of reference our DS14 HS tagged the lowest number of applicants to NAU and ASU in several years, this might have had something to do with the dwindling AIMS AZ scholarship but you would think that would affect UofA as well, but they too have had an uptick in applications to UofA, seems UofA is becoming more popular in addition to the wave of applicants from California.

UofA also initiated a tuition freeze for all 4 years of undergrad with this years admissions, so all new UofA undergrads know their tuition is frozen until graduation no more increases, NAU has had this for some years, not sure if ASU will try to initiate but likely they will have to for new applicants.

<a href=“Acceptance rates at elite U.S. colleges decline”>Acceptance rates at elite U.S. colleges decline;

Thanks. I can’t wait to see the actual UA application numbers when they are available. I’m still not really believing they had a 25% increase. The acceptance rate could go down without apps rising that sharply. Funny, I see Forbes has UA acceptance rate listed as 71% for 2012 incoming class, but it wasn’t nearly that low according to that year’s CDS. Wonder what’s up with that.

I don’t know that 70% is low for a state university though. Those numbers are all over. Our flagship UW-Madison had 51% acceptance last year and I always thought that is rather high. It is low as compared to ASU, certainly.

@celesteroberts : It’s all relative at the end of the day too, so UofA accept just 7 out of 10 applicants whereas ASU accepted 90%, they are still both state schools in a redneck and backward facing state.

All relative, I agree. You could be living in Nigeria or Saudi Arabia. Count your blessings.
