A later book titled The Public Ivies: America's Flagship Public Universities (2001) by Howard and Matthew Greene of Greene's Guides expanded upon the first list to include 30 colleges and universities. Includes U of A.
And an Ivy League is just 8 schools that made a pact a long time ago. Are you saying that Stanford, Notre Dame, Berkley are worse than an ivy because they aren't in the northeast?

"Are you saying that Stanford, Notre Dame, Berkley are worse than an ivy because they aren't in the northeast?"

No I am not saying that at all. I'm just saying that when you ask people to name the top 30 schools that you would consider "public ivy" school, I bet most won't mention UA. I've barely even though about the school before people mentioned it tonight.

Just research the school, its funds, and its staff members. You will be pleasantly surprised.

They accept 77% plus, it is simply not in the league of the top publics including Cal, UVA, UCLA, UNC, UMich.....Wisconsin and on and on. It is barely in the league of the mid tier CSUs.

Kids read this site and ask questions because they really want to know. While UA I'm sure has strengths as all U's do, with all due respect, the term ivy is used to connote a highly selective, rigorous school which UA is not.

ASU honors is really that great? How would you compare ASU honors to a school ranked in top 100... where would it be seen as to you?

I agree completely with what you said hmom5.

I asked some people about UA and they all said there was no way that it could be compared to schools like UCLA, UVA, etc.

It is a nice average school, and there is nothing wrong with that. It just can not at all be compared to Ivy League Schools or schools in the top 20.

Ummm, Hmom, I wonder what experience you have with the U of A, like have you actually taken any classes there?
Coolbreeze, Barrett at ASU is one of the top honors colleges in the country. Graduates frequently get accepted to ivy league grad schools. Good choice for the price.

I don't know if you go there or not and if that is why you defend the school being like an ivy so much, but it seems like you are the only one.

Arizonagirl, in the early 80's when your source was declaring UA a public ivy, the bottom of my high school's classes, who did not have a prayer of going to a top or mid tier UC, often headed to UA. It was known to have great parties with little required academically.

No, I personally never took a class there and I'm sure it has many strengths. But to call it comparable to top state U's is simply ridiculous by any measure I can think of.

the chip on your shoulder is showing arizonagirl. sure you go to a somewhat decent school and there are probably some good things about the u of a, but to put it in a league with berkeley, michigan, and william and mary is just ridiculous. i'm willing to bet maybe a dozen or two kids TOPS who go to u of a could have gotten accepted to william and mary let alone graduate with a decent gpa. so until your school's stats are on par with berkeley and michigan, it's just another state school.

It's okay that everyone has opinions. I'm just sharing mine. I don't go to the U of A- it's one of my options. Actually I know many smart people going there that could get into the ivies, as they have been pursued by those colleges. I know it is not the same as UCLA or Berkley, but it is still in that category, if not on a bit of a lower tier. This is just what I have researched and found from current and past students. I'm sorry if I offended anyone, but please don't rush to conclusions about me or my personal opinions.

If you are considering it and think it's anywhere near the level of UCB and UCLA, you need to do much, much more research.

I know it is not the same as UCLA or Berkley, but it is still in that category, if not on a bit of a lower tier.

It is definitely not close to the level of UCB and UCLA. ...just saying.

ArizonaGirl --

UC Santa Cruz
UC Riverside
UC Merced

These are fine universities about the same quality as University of Arizona, but smaller, without the D-1 athletic experience... also not near asa much bar hopping as in Tucson, which is it's own UofA sport.

OP - you asked what is notable about UofA, and then qualified that by specifying academics.. that qualification sort of kills the question. It does have a great softball team, great bars, and the sahuaro cacti are majestic.

I agree with the comments about Az. St. Honors program... a very fine safety indeed.
