At Rensselaer, Another Record Year for Applications

Go RPI!

RPI: News & Events - At Rensselaer, Another Record Year for Applications

More than 13,200 high school students have filed applications to attend Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, according to numbers released today by Rensselaer Admissions. Applications are still being counted, but the current record total represents a growth of more than 8.8 percent since last year at this time.

“Rensselaer has continued to garner unprecedented levels of student interest this year,” said Paul Marthers, vice president for enrollment and dean of undergraduate and graduate admissions. “In addition to an overall increase in the number of applications to the Institute, we are also seeing important increases in some of our priority growth areas, including an increase in women and minority applicants and growth in geographic and cultural diversity. Together, we are building the campus of the future that includes diversity in all its cultural and intellectual forms and brings together students from around the world and many perspectives to grow their knowledge base and work together to help solve the biggest problems facing society, business, science, architecture, and engineering.”

The 2010 applicant pool represents a continued expansion of the national and international profile of the student body, as well as a significant increase in applications from women and underrepresented minorities.

Of particular interest are these significant increases realized since last year:

Applications from underrepresented minorities have increased by 22.7 percent.
Applications from female students have increased by 13 percent.
Applications from international students have increased by 39.6 percent.
Applications from U.S. students outside of the Northeast have increased by 20 percent.
Rensselaer also has seen significant growth in the number of prospective students who are interested in new areas of the expanding curriculum, beyond the Institute’s tradition of strong applicant growth in engineering:

Applications to the School of Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences have increased by 7.6 percent.
Applications to the School of Science have increased by 12.5 percent.
Applications to the Lally School of Management & Technology have increased by 1 percent.
The academic quality of applicants also continues to rise. The average SAT score of the applicants is up almost 13 points from the previous year. Applicants continue to demonstrate extracurricular achievement and leadership, ranging from sports captains and class presidents, to entrepreneurs, Science Olympiad stars, and Eagle Scouts.

Published January 27, 2010

Hard to believe that for the Fall of 2004 entering class there were 5,400 applicants and now, for the Fall of 2010, there are over 13,000.

A 140% increase in applicants in 6 years. Amazing.

Have they increased the admissions staff at all? I know I’m beating a dead horse here, but 4 weeks to process our application material??? Come on!

The average SAT score for the class of 2013 was 1354/1600. This data suggests that the class of 2014 might hit 1365 - 1370 or so. RPI engineering is underranked year after year by US New but I think young students are finally starting to realize that our university is one of the best engineering schools on the planet.

DS’s application has been complete since Nov. 1 AVHS! My perspective is that no news is better than bad news–I think they’re waiting for 7th semester grades in DS’s case as he’s a strong applicant in all but gpa.

At RPI, Regular Decisions all come out on the same day. This year it will be March 13:

[Dates and Deadlines - Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI)](http://admissions.rpi.edu/freshman/deadlines.html)

(Last year it was March 14.)

Good luck to your DS!!

@schmoomcgoo

I’m not talking about a decision, I just want to verify they’ve received more than DS’s application. Does your online application status show anything beyond “Application Received”? That’s all DS has except for “Please allow up to 4 weeks for materials to be processed and to be marked as received on this website.”

I know this doesn’t really help, but this has been a problem in the past, too:

Last year, a lot of items were posted on-line in early February.

Okay, DS emailed them this morning and just got the following response. We feel much better.

Thank you for your interest in Rensselaer!

I have just checked your application status and your application is complete. Receipt of these materials may not appear on the status information page for an additional two to three weeks. Application decisions for Regular Decision applicants will be posted online on the evening of March 14th. We appreciate your patience and assure you that we will make every attempt to provide you with the earliest possible updates.

Please contact us if you have any additional questions or concerns.

Note: Strange that they release their decisions on a Sunday evening.

Good, good, one less thing for you (and your DS) to worry about.

Now, you just have to wait until March 14, see all the other admissions results, and then DS will have a decision to make.

Oh, he won’t have all his results until mid April. We still have 2 schools left to confirm complete apps. It fees good to get another one out of the way.

RPI might be releasing the results on March 14 because that is Pi Day (March 14 equals 3.14).

I think they may be copying at least one of the other schools (maybe CMU) that released results on Pi Day in the past.

VERY good point.
DS would have pointed that out too.
I’m an accountant, I swear science smarts skipped a generation in our family!

DS submitted the commonap to rpi and it has shown up as complete since Nov. 1. DD applied two years ago and was admitted prior to Christmas regular decision.

I think they may have stopped doing that, as last year all the RD results came out on the same day in March.

This year it appears that they have been pretty closely following the dates on the Admissions website, so far:

[Dates and Deadlines - Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI)](http://admissions.rpi.edu/freshman/deadlines.html)

MIT releases decisions on Pi Day at 1:59, Pi to 5 significant figures.

Last year R-Pi released admissions decisions on Pi Day – March 14th.

That the number of applications rose again this year isn’t news. What would be news is if the number of applications decreased.

Edit: Quoting von Neumann is always a good way to preface a 100th post :)

mdbjr: Is that 1:59AM East Coast time?

It was 1:59 pm ET, which for those that think in terms of 24 hour clocks, wreaks havoc with the pi theme.
