AT&T DSL vs. Comcast Cable

Hello folks,

For those of you living on Southside, which do you prefer? I'm thinking about either one right now and can't decide. AT&T is cheaper for its elite plan, but I've seen people having frequent problems pop up as they get disconnected from the Internet. For you AT&T users, have you experienced similar problems?

I haven't heard any such problems with Comcast, but their plans are quite expensive. I also plan on getting Cable TV later, so I'm hoping to make it a bundle later on.

For now though, which one should I choose?

I know this has been asked before, but I want to hear more from personal experience instead of hearsay. Thanks.

I live on Southside and I just got 1 yr Comcast internet at 12 mpbs for $19.99/month.

I don’t have any advice if you’re getting cable TV as well.

I hear Comcast gives out great deals during Caltopia. Sorry for the hearsay.

I have problems. I think you know about it rane `1

Castel: I’m pretty sure it’s a 6-month for $19.99 deal. Am I mistaken?

FellowCCViewer: Hmm, I’m taking summer classes at Berkeley so I can’t wait until Caltopia =/.

88888888: 88

there is currently a deal for 6mbps for 12 months at 19.99 (they advertise it as 12mbps with powerboost), and a 8 (advertised as 16) for 29.99 for 12 months. just call comcast or sign up over live chat.

It is as rofflez says. Just pretend you know about the deal and they’ll give it to you for a whole year instead of 6 months.

For that 19.99/month promo (for 6 months, at least on the page I’m looking at), it says that:

“Offer limited to Performance High-Speed Internet and requires subscription to either Comcast Cable or phone service at regular rates.”

Did you have to sign up for Cable TV/Phone to get that rate?

Also, Castel, could you tell me exactly how the phone conversation should go so that I get the one-year rate?

Comcast frequently offers these kinds of deals, although this one is particularly good. All you need to do is call Comcast and tell them you heard there was a $19.99/month internet only for 12 months deal (it helps to speak brightly and friendly - if you’ve ever had a job where you deal with hundreds of customers a day, it’s obvious why). In many cases with these things, your mileage will vary depending on the particular representative you’re speaking with, but this deal has been out for some time now and they should all be aware. If, however, they refuse to acknowledge it, just keep calling back and asking about the deal and you’ll eventually get through.

Does anyone know if at&t has a one year contract thing? If not, i should cancel. right rane?

I don’t think at&t has a contract. You could cancel, or you could try calling at&t threatening to cancel unless they pricematch comcast - that way you don’t have to have the hassle of switching ISPs (risking installation fee, requiring a new modem, etc).

88888888, there is no term committment with AT&T DSL, so I am sure that you can cancel it anytime.

Got the $19.99/month for 12 months deal for standalone Cable Internet with Comcast!

Thanks for the help yall! =).

Where exactly on Southside do you guys live? I’m in the Claremont neighborhood close to Willard Park, and the assistant I spoke with over Live Chat referred me to the “Savings and Services at My Address” page which listed the $19.99 internet only deal, but for only six months. Should I try again for the twelve-month deal, or is this really the only deal available at my address?

did comcast have a installation fee?

Try again for the deal. Either call the phone number, or keep getting different CSR’s for the live chat. You can get it for 12 months for sure.

There was no installation fee for me because the previous tenants had cable and I had my own modem - I went to the comcast store (which had a RIDICULOUS line by the way) to sign up and got the installation CD there. I’m sure theres a way to do it completely online (although I had problems with that).

The modem is $3.00 and the installation fee is $25.00 (regularly $99.00, according to the live chat rep).

What’s a good router to go along with Comcast Cable? Linksys?
