What is the current state of AT&T coverage in Ithaca/at Cornell? I heard from many at Cornell Days that a new AT&T tower was to be built. I don't know if anyone could answer this, but will T-Mobile users be able to roam on the AT&T network once completed (since they are both on GSM)? Thanks.

i had AT&T for the majority of freshman year until i switched to verizon. they’ve been saying that they were going to build a tower since last august. it was supposed to have been done by december, but service didn’t improve then, so it probably didn’t happen - especially if you heard during cornell days that it was also “going to happen”.

in ithaca - AT&T isn’t bad. on campus? AT&T will get you by in most areas, but you’ll also have a lot of dead areas - most notably, a lot of north campus, especially in dorms, and almost all of the academic buildings (including mann library!) on the ag quad.

[Cornell Chronicle: AT&T antennas will improve cellular coverage](New AT&T cellular antennas will improve coverage as Cornell opens campus to all carriers | Cornell Chronicle)

I don’t agree with “all of the academic buildings on the ag quad.” I get service in Warren and Kennedy and some places in Mann. It’s definitely not as good as Verizon, but people obviously make it work.

when i had AT&T, i wasn’t able to get service in warren or mann. maybe sometimes in kennedy if i sat in the right places, but rarely. still, verizon is MUCH less of a hassle, and is far more accessible.

So T-mobile users will not get signal basically? haha… that will suck…

Yea…I use AT&T right now and when I visited Cornell, north campus is essentially a dead zone. I saw that article with the “plans” to build AT&T towers but I’m more interested in knowing if those towers will be built by the fall semester.

If they are, then great. I don’t have to go through the hassle of switching providers.
If not, I’m going to have to switch the Verizon lol

I am fairly certain that the New York State roaming agreement between T-Mobile and AT&T ended. (The agreement was originally between Cingular and T-Mobile as T-Mo had no CA/NV coverage and C had no NY/NJ coverage. After Cingular acquired AT&T, they for had native coverage in NY and it became unnecessary.)

Regardless, I was at Cornell yesterday, and my T-Mobile phone worked inside buildings both in the Ag Quad and North Campus. (Unlike cc102, my phone did work in Warren.)

I have AT&T and my phone works everywhere. I have always had service.

@chendrix

What model of phone?

i hope my at&t razr will work

Nokia 2610.

I have AT&T with a Nokia 6555 and it’s rare for me to not have service anywhere on campus. Occasionally my bars drop to 1, but the calls are still solid. I only really lose service in basements on central. Phone works on north too, for those curious.

I have an at&t razr and when I was there for cornell days, I was able to get service every time my phone rang or whenever I needed to make a call or send a text.

thanks for all the helpful replies. this is a great excuse for me to switch carriers (have tmo atm) and convince my parents to get me a new iphone when they come out. haha

haha… I think I might stick with my tmobile for now and wait until I get on campus if I should switch service. congrats on getting the new iphone i guess haha.
