At what point should I consider transferring?

Hi,

I’m about to start my sophomore year, and I’m dreading going back to college. It’s far from home and I don’t like the location, and I just wish that I had picked my state school last year. Despite being much lower in ranking, I feel like I would’ve been more comfortable at a school near home than going 1500 miles away. Everyone told me to stick it out for the first year and I did so, but since I am still not feeling good about my current college, should I start thinking about the possibility of transferring? I just don’t want to go through college counting down the days until I can go home (like I am doing now). I have friends from HS at my local school, and haven’t made any good friends at my current school. Sorry for the rant, but I’m just wondering if now is a reasonable time to considering transferring?

If you gave it 2 semesters, stayed away for summer and still feel like you don’t want to go back then probably it’s a good time to transfer.

If you are doing well in academics and don’t see any mental health or financial issue developing by staying here then just stick it out. You can try to graduate early, that may keep you busy and make you more enthusiastic about things.

@CupCakeMuffins Thanks. I doubt I will be able to graduate early because my school is not good with giving AP credits and I find a 15 credit semester to be the most I can do. Although my grades are decent (I think I have a 3.4) I find myself unhappy thinking about going back and staying there for 3 more years. I also hate the hassle of traveling back and forth from college to home every break, its exhausting (but I definitely do want to come home every break). I just feel like transferring to my local school would be a good mix of being independent living by myself, while also retaining some familiarity with my hometown and family close by.

The tough part is now convincing my parents, as they are in love with my current school.

Well, if you feel strongly about it and transfer won’t add any burden on your parents then in the end it’s your decision. Just make sure you aren’t doing it for friends or girlfriends and possibility of you not liking local uni as much as you think you would.

May be a semester abroad would put things into perspective?
