Just out of curiosity… any estimates as to what proportion of Brown students say they believe in God?

I hear the campus is liberal so i wouldn't put the number high.

given that i've never heard anyone going around asking people their religious beliefs, i would say no one has any real idea

Utterly impossible to determine. Sorry.

I wouldn't say impossible Modest, just really hard. One would need to have a survey given out to the entire student body and one would also have to make sure that everyone answered it correctly.

But for the sake of this thread, you are right, it would be rather impossible.

Funny, right after I saw this thread, I filled out the Student Interests/Information questionnaire, and one of the questions actually did ask with what religion we identify (atheism/agnosticism being one of the choices). I doubt that information will be made public, but it would be interesting to see the results.

Since when does being liberal equate with not believing in God? Those can be two totally separate belief systems?

^ Statistically, liberals have a higher percentage of Atheists and Agnostics when compared to conservatives.

I had the same question. I understand what neo is saying but to assume it is a low number just because it is a liberal campus is a very stereotypical thing to do. I'm not the least bit religious and I'm a conservative. They aren't mutually exclusive.

that's because there are different areas to be conservative in (fiscal, religious, etc.)

I don't know if the results are public, but Brown Hillel says that 20% of the campus is Jewish (though that says nothing about whether people do or do not believe in God). There are a lot of Atheists, which is good for religious poeple, in my opinion, because it makes them think critically about their beliefs and makes religious practice a personal, rather than public, affair, as it should be.

dbate that's not only completely incorrect, it's borderline offensive

i'm religious and i'm very liberal, as are many, many people in the world. The two are separate, or at least should be. It's patently ignorant and unbelievably self-righteous to think otherwise.

Jesus wasn't a conservative, my friend. He wasn't a liberal either. God doesn't have a political party

neo -- how much higher? which religions? which sects of which religions? a correlation is not necessarily a causal relationship.

yes, more fundamentally christian people are republican, because there is a false notion that one leads to the other. Unless these people have come to a reasoned conclusion as to why they are christian AND conservative, instead of following whatever trendy political thought pattern for people of their respective religion, they are sheep. Go ahead, be offended. At least you'll be thinking for yourself. It'll be a good chance to exercise your neurons. But I'm sure you fall nicely into the reasoned, former category, right?

My religion has nothing to do with my politics, except, you know, for those big messages (notice how I'm not picking and choosing obscure passages and instead focusing on the message) about not throwing the first stone, helping the downtrodden, treating others as you would wish to be treated. I'm not basing any beliefs of mine on what some apostle or prophet said about a slaughtering their neighbors goat, or hopping on one foot while not eating pork

But here's the clincher, kids. I believe in those things religion or not. They are not just religious values, they are human values. And that's why there is a difference, among free thinking people, between religion and politics

peace out

p.s. i was rambling at dbate right there since he made the initial assertion, lest someone else get offended.

i'm sorry, but did i miss something?
are we at Pat Robertson Law School, or are we at an Ivy League University?
