Athens music scene

I'm from Nashville, TN and I'm only looking at schools with supposed good music scenes. I was wondering about the music scene in Athens. Nashville is a lot like college towns like Oxford, MS because we have this relatively underground collective called "Nashvilles Dead" that operates the local scene and sets up shows at both venues and in houses. Does Athens have anything like that that I could get into and make some friends in? I know that there are some good bands there like Reptar but I was wondering more of whether I'd be able to find some like-minded people that I could establish a friend group and possibly start my own band with because I'm not particularly into the whole greek scene.

Does anyone know? Your answers would be a huge help.
Thanks!

I got my son to answer this one ; don’t know if it will all come through as a “paste”:
I’m not totally sure about an official group, but athens has one of the best music scenes of any town in the united states.

There are countless bands that form, multiple venues in which to play and listen to music,
record companies, music stores, an instrument store, the student radio station, and much more.
There is also a new music business certificate program through the university.
