My son is very impressed with Marist but is hesitant about going there because he is an atheist and is afraid that he will be an outcast. Can an atheist be comfortable at Marist? Does an atheist have to keep his lack of beliefs to himself? There seems to be acceptance of other religions but is there tolerance towards atheism?

does Marist report any religious affiliation? for some reason, and i may be totally wrong, i think they are catholic? anyway, yes Marist has impressive academics according to rankings. and i'd think your s will have a similar experience anywhere, where differences among individuals are not acceptable. NOT knowing how Marist is on this, i'd say a more liberal atmosphere would be best for your s. and most college campuses lean toward liberal. good luck!

My son goes there and although we are Roman Catholic, he does not practice. Marist does not have a religious affiliation any more, but one of the freshman mentors is a "Brother". My son has never mentioned that he feels any pressure and has friends of faiths other than his. You won't be able to get away from holiday observances, and charity events like the Giving Tree around Christmastime, but I've never gotten the vibe from him that any other views are unwelcome.
