Athlete with mismatched GPA/ACT -- which schools?

My son just scored a 33 on his first go ACT (planning to take it again) and has a WGPA of 3.82 and UWGPA of 3.36. He is a varsity thrower on his track and field team and has good ECs. He would like to do Engineering of some flavor. We live in So Cal but he is happy to go out of state/country too. He wants somewhere that is not rural and is not particularly interested in very small schools. Any ideas of what would be a good match? He is feeling a little lost in the search...

We aren't eligible for financial aid but he will probably need a little help if possible.

Try looking through these threads for some merit aid. They focus on full tuition but the schools usually have lower level scholarships available as well. He should certainly look into the UCs and CSUs as well.

Alabama would give him free tuition for his stats. Lots of Calif kids at Bama. If he wants to play a sport or play intramurals or whatever, Bama has top facilities.

As an eng’g major, he’d also get 2500 per year stacked on top of the free tuition. So, remaining costs would be quite reasonable.

Bama has a brand new Science and Eng’g complex…over 900,000 square feet of new STEM space.

eng’s scholarships

Does he want to keep throwing in college? If so, he isn’t going to do that at Alabama unless he is one of the best in the country!

I think his scores and GPA are fine. What about Lehigh or Lafayette in PA?

Thanks for the help so far  I did look at the roster and there is a kid throwing there throwing the same as he is now as a high schooler, so I’m guessing it is possible. Yes, he would like to continue in college.

I appreciate the links and ideas, will start looking into it.

Erin’s dad, he has already written to some UC coaches and visited some campuses, also a couple of CSUs.

I think on the most part he would prefer to be on one of the coasts. He also prefers more high tech architecture not sweeping lawns and beautiful facades. Low cost education is really appealing though and would allow for graduate school.

I don’t know what happened to my above post with double pasted words. Sorry. Also the eng’g scholarship link didn’t post.

Here it is: (this eng’g scholarship would be stacked on top of the free tuition scholarship from the univ)

Students who have a 32-36 ACT or 1400-1600 SAT (math and verbal scores only) and at least a 3.5 cumulative GPA will receive $2,500 per year for four years.

“Low cost education is really appealing though and would allow for graduate school.”

That was our goal. Younger son is now heading for medical school which is much more affordable since we paid little for his undergrad.

Thank you for the suggestions, he checked those out. Are there any others he should look at?

Mom2, he did apply to Alabama and got in and got the scholarships. We are planning to take a trip out there to look see. Thank you for the information :)

Momof, you are correct, he hasn’t reached the walk on yet for his event for Alabama so he will have to decide how important it is that he throws. He is more than qualified for many divII/III schools though including some he has applied to.
