Athletes applying EA

If you are a recruited athlete applying EA, do the coaches tell you the desision right when it comes out. I was the #1 recruit and the coach does not want to tell me if I am in or not, does that mean bad news... I live on the West Coast so I still haven't gotten the mail.

S is a recruited athlete and applied EA, but we haven't asked the coach. We'll wait for the letter. It is moot now because S got into Penn ED. Hate to say goodbye to Chicago, but have to. (my law school alma mater)
Good luck to everybody.

Momofwildchild,

Good luck to you and your son!

ak:

don't read anything into it -- unlike in D1, D3 coaches can only ask (and beg), but Ted has final say. Sorry, but you gotta wait for pony express.

Good luck.

I'm am also a recruited athlete (football, whats your sport ak?) I am applying RD, and other than the coach telling me that he is 98% sure I will get in, and the promise of a likely letter, what other assurance do i have I will get into school? How much of an assurance is a likely letter?

Does UChicago place emphasis on athletic scholarships? Maybe I can muster one up for cross-country...

asia

The UofC, as with every other DIII institution, can NOT give out athletic scholarships of any kind. They can, however, support your application for admission.

That's what I heard. I was just surprised that they recruit - thought there might be something more.

Recruiting- yes. Scholarships- no. They do still try to field the best teams possible, and recruiting is the only way. The pool they have to recruit is quite small actually, talented athletes who are also good students, as admissions will not let just anyone into school. The advantages are that you get to play a sport that you presumably enjoy and a supported application. I feel I could probably get in on my own merit, but the thought of a nearly guaranteed admission to such a great school feels wonderful.

myketb - I have nothing against that; it's great that you can play as well as you do while maintaining academics. I just need some more funds before I can finalize the decision to go to Chicago, and I held a glinter of hope that running might accomplish this.

Nephew was a football recruit--hot talked by the coach, invited for a game, personalized visit, etc. Ended up deferred EA.

asiaknight: I apologize, I by no means meant for my post to come off at all unpleasant. Good luck with with finding a few more dollars, I am in a similar situation myself. Good luck with the financial aid dept. as well as with merit aid.

goblue: Did that occur this year? I see you are in Michigan, did recruiting coach happen to be Coach Sokol? I am curious as to how exactly these things work; what kinds of test scores did your nephew have?

I'm a football recruit and also just got accepted. I had to wait to find out...just like everyone else.

Another football player- very nice. What position do you play?

OLB/SS what about you?

QB- are you going to one of the overnight visits in January?

does u of chicago send out likely letters for recruited athletes? my son was also recruited by u of chicago for football. it's a small world, isn't it? sokol did the campus tour for us--great guy--hope it works ou for you guys!

Wild Child was accepted, but went ED to Penn, so Chicago is off the table. Hard to say goodbye to these wonderful schools.
Good luck to all, and GO CHICAGO!

wbow- I committed over the weekend to UofC after- guess what- being on campus and getting a campus tour by Coach Sokol. He instructed me that I would recieve a likely letter within the next month. It seems like a great program and best of luck to your son.

I am in. AHHHHHHHH Can't stop smiling, the coach new the entire time.... He called me 5 minutes after I opened the THICK envelope.
