I am a sophomore with a 3.4 weighted gpa, high PSAT scores, and colleges already scouting me at the D3 & D2 levels to play soccer. I have taken all AP and Honors courses for both my years in high school so far (excluding math, which I am 3 years ahead in). What are the chances of me getting into a D1 or D2 school with my current grades? and also how much pull does a coach have on the admissions process and helping an athlete get accepted??
Not all D1 or D2 schools have the same academic standards. For example, most (all?) large state flagships are D1 and many are fairly easy to get admitted to. But, Harvard is also D1 and much harder to get admitted to. You really need to look up the admittance statistics for each school to find out if it is within your range. Coaches can pull kids in who are below average, but you still must be able to do the work.
Whether you can go D1, D2 or D3 will depend on how good you are at your sport, and how much time you wish to dedicate to it in college. Your academic stats have nothing to do with the athletic level.
Go to the Athletics forum, under Admissions board. Lots of threads on soccer recruiting etc.
D1 and D2 coaches push harder to get their recruited applicants in, especially if they believe that it’s an athlete the team needs. D3 is very ehhhh. Remember some of the best schools in the country (MIT, Caltech, Pomona, etc.) are D3. There, you can still get rejected/not accepted even when you have talked talked to the coach. If the school is not heavy on sports culture, say Caltech or any of the Claremonts, your chances are still higher than most, but you can still be stuck with a surprise or two.
