D is being recruited by 2 highly selective LACs. LAC #1 said she "easily" passed admissions pre-read, coaches have been calling every other day and asking her to ED, and admissions office sent handwritten note encouraging application. LAC #1 knows D is also being recruited by LAC #2. LAC #2 Admissions office said it is "encouraged" by D's transcript/scores, but couldn't say she is a "likely" admit until entire app is submitted, because our HS is highly competitive and many kids apply to LAC #2. LAC #2 coaches told D that she had to apply ED 1 to give her the best chance for admission, and that "if it comes to that" (ie she is denied/deferred), she could apply ED 2 to LAC #1. Do any athletes out there have experience applying ED 1 and then having to tell second choice school that they will be applying ED 2 if they don't get into their first choice? D (and we) are worried that coaches at second choice school wont wait for D to hear ED1 results, and will offer spot to next kid on the depth chart.

nerve wracking situation…i don’t think there are any guarantees here even if you flat-out explain what you want to do to coach 2. would d get into school 2 regardless? then perhaps it’s not much risk. i would explain situation very clearly to coach 1; let him know it’s d’s tippy top choice but she could use more assurance. the other kids applying from her school shouldn’t be a factor --don’t the athletic recruits get separate adcoms? if coach is slotting her for a spot, it should be hers unless he’s not quite there yet and is either stringing you along or you’re misunderstanding him.

why the big preference for 1 over 2? academic? athletic? perhaps reevaluate and see if 2 isn’t really first choice. it’s nice to be wanted! good luck and keep us posted

sorry- think i reversed 1 and 2. in my post 1=1st choice.

to answer q though; i do know athletic recruits who did not get into ed1 and did get in ed 2 to next choice but i don’t know if the coaches knew beforehand or if the ed2 schools weren’t even pursued until after ed 1 rounds. hope i’m not confusing things further --haven’t had my coffee yet

I asked a NESCAC coach basically that exact question in an interview and this was his response:
“…as far as keeping in touch with other coaches, I would say that it doesn’t happen often but kids can certainly reach out to other coaches and let them know that if things don’t work out at school A, they’ll likely apply to school B in the ED 2 round or regular decision…they can ask if there would be the potential for support in one of those rounds.”

Yes, this is nervewracking.
Definitely have your D ask the coach at her first choice VERY directly what support they are giving her with admissions. If they are not specific, then she really needs to decide how much she prefers that school over her second choice.
If she does apply ED1 with her first choice, in our experience yes she should let the other coach know she had to make a tough decision, and will be in touch if things don’t work out. Less support often available in the ED2 round, however.

Just wanted to share that sometimes things really do work out
My S is now playing his sport as a Sophomore at what he thought was his #2 school – Actually the entire experience in the school has been so good that I truly cannot see that the #1 school would have been better

so 2 years ago the coach at #1 school (an Ivy) told him he was a “recruited athlete” but had little other communication. #2 (a top LAC -D3) school called several times and the coach indicated that he really wanted my son but did tell him that he had limited influence on admissions. S told coach #2 that he really liked the school but still wanted to try for #1. He aplied ED1 to #1 and was rejected. He contacted the coach for #2 and told him that he had been rejected from #1 and asked if he could apply ED2 to #2 and was told - yes go for it!
He was admitted to #2 choice and looking back I think it is a better fit and he is in a fabulous situation.
So hang in there , be honest, and things will sort out

Varska, thanks for the info about ED1/ED2 in NESCAC.
