Athletic/Academic "Power Ranking"

NCSA Collegiate Power Rankings

Honestly, I don’t see how you can mix LAC and research institutions on one hand and D1, D2, and D3 on the other and combine them all into one ranking.
So, Amherst is the no. 1 institution based on its strength of NCAA athletic department and academic excellence?

This is how NCSA outlines the logic used in this Power Ranking:

“…The Collegiate Power Rankings are calculated for each college/university at the NCAA Division I, II and III levels by averaging the Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup ranking, the NCAA student-athlete graduation rate of each college/university and the U.S. News & World Report ranking.”

I am not sure what the point of these calculations/purpose.
