I graduated earlier this month and now I am heading full force into the application process. I am applying to Colby, Middlebury, Dartmouth, Harvard, USC, USD, Denver University and Williams.

I applied to Harvard Early Decision but if I am not accepted early I will drop my application completely and apply EDII to Colby.

Now to some of the raw data:

3.95 GPA

SAT- 580 Critical Reading, 580 Writing, 670 Math
ACT- Best Composite: 26 Best Subscores: 31 English, 24 Math, 25 Reading, 25 Math, 8 Writing
(Doesn't make sense does it? Great ACT English, terrible math. Great SAT Math, terrible english.)

Extra Curriculars:

Ski Racer - looking to ski collegiately, just curious to learn more about the coach's ability to sway admission...
Senior Class Representative (Significant of President/Vice-President)
Tons of Community Service at Animal Shelter, Disabled Skiing Program.
I have had the same job since sophomore year.
JV Golf - Freshman & Sophomore years.
Rotary Club/NHS

Those are just the ones I could think of off the top of my head.

If you all could let me know how great you think my chances are that'd be EPIC!

Good GPA, but your test scores are below average for many of those schools, including Harvard. If you’re able to retake the SAT or ACT, I’d strongly suggest doing so. ECs don’t really stand out, either. I’d say these schools are reaches for you.

What do you think would stand out more in terms of EC’s?

The test scores are my primary concern but I’ve got to take SATII subject tests at some point. I might be able to take the ACT again but I’ve done everything in terms of prepping for the test and nothing seems to be helping…my subscores just fluctuate. If I go up in one area I go down in the others.

Any advice as well as more opinions would be appreciated.

hi! i dont think your EC’s are bad at all. they arent perfect, but if you can touch on them, that will do wonders. take all the prep SAT classes or books you can, and go in feeling prepared when you go to take the test, if you are taking it again. And, like the above said, maybe try the ACT!

Thanks for the input! So if I took the ACT again it’d be my 5th try at it and if I took the SAT again it’d be my 2nd go at it. Unfortunately with being an athlete, I am gone a lot during the winter and if I want to ski for any of these schools I need to do well. I don’t have another chance at the SAT although I definitely think it is my route…I wish I had tried earlier.

I’m now concerned that you are all worried with my EC’s, those are just a couple of them.

I volunteer at my church’s thrift store.
I do service with National Honors Society.
I work at my team’s Ski Swap.

Do colleges like that kids have a job throughout high school?

I’m confident my recommendations are awesome from all areas.

4.0 Senior Year - Calculus, Physics, Oil Painting, US History, English, Public Speaking. (My School offers NO AP.)

Your SAT scores might not be the best, considering all of the competitive colleges you’re seeking (a lot of those have tons of perfect scorers, don’t they?) although your ECs and the like look nice. (Also, you graduated earlier this month? o_o)

Yea so I never really thought about mentioning it, but yes. I graduated November 16th. I’m not trying to sound egotistical here but I am a Nationally Ranked Alpine Skier. I attend a school that is in session April-November so that all of the students have the entire winter off to compete in their sports and not be forced to juggle school all the while. All the schools I am considering have NCAA Ski Teams that I am trying to get on. My primary EC is Alpine Skiing. I am probably close to what Malcom Gladwell defines as an expert, “10,000 Hours.”

My predicament is solely my test scores, I think?

I have a relatively english ACT & a relatively high Math SAT. Do you think that schools will acknowledge this?

Harvard is clearly a stretch academically…based on my standardized test scores, but there ski team isn’t the best so maybe the coach will pull harder for me?

I’m a terrible test taker!!! My GPA proves I am not an idiot and I wouldn’t bother applying to these schools if I didn’t think I could handle the work.

If suck is the top 20% (my scores) than your class ranking sucks. You gave me Zero input whatsoever on what I actually need to know. Thanks for coming onto my post and taking time out of your day to come bash on me.

Harvard and Williams may be hard reaches due to the scores. I’d suggest bumping up the scores as most applicants (especially to HYP’s like Harvard) have stellar scores in addition to their EC’s (which is why they say that EC’s are important for Ivies etc as their scores have reached a critical level. A 1830 SAT won’t do it, no matter what they may say, unless your EC’s include awesome patents/Intel Science Fair level stuff, and that might not cut it either.

I’ll PM you exactly why I am so sure about this…
