Athletic Applicants - How does it work?

I was reading on a separate Stanford thread about how much sway the coaches have in admissions process, and I'm a bit confused.

Do the students (in addition to applying) contact the coaches, who then submit recommendations to the admissions committee? Or do the students just apply, and then the admissions committee gives the application files to the coaches, who make recommendations based off that?

For specific advice, I am a varsity fencer at my high school, the A strip of foil. I have a USFA D rank and finished 15th in the state HS individual tournament for boy's foil. Is that enough to contact a coach with, or do I need national fencing awards (which I have none of) to consider bothering a coach?

For most schools, it seems to come down to “are you recruited?”

Have you looked here?

I didn’t know that subforum existed. Thanks for that.
