I’ve seen other NESCAC schools (Amherst, Bowdoin, Colby, Midd, Williams) described as “jocky” schools. How does Bates compare in this regard? My impression while visiting was that athletics don’t play as important a role socially at Bates as at some of its peers.

Bates is far from a “jocky” school. I’m surprised the other NESCAC schools would be described as such. Athletes do tend to hang out with their teammates, but they are by no means exclusive clubs.
