Athletic edge?

Has anyone had any experience with athletes and admissions at Rice? I'm wondering whether or not athletes gain any edge in admissions. I'm interested in walking on at Rice and one of the coaches said he "protected" my appliction (ED), but I'm not exactly sure if that holds any value. Any idea? Thanks in advance

Walkons need to be admitted into Rice first before joining the sport. I don’t think there is any advantage unless you are a scholarship athlete.

You would think that Ant–but you’d be wrong. Officially, you don’t get any ups for being a walkon, but it “can’t hurt”. That’s all I’ll say.

Well, yes. The walk on’s I know though were told that they needed to be admitted first and then could play.

I don’t know anything else behind the scenes…

Well he had told me that, but I was wondering what exactly it meant when he said he “protected” my app? I was under the assumption that all athletes had to be accepted first, then they could obtain scholarships. *

I am a freshman this year and I have a friend that was a walk on for the baseball team this year. He was already in contact with coaches prior to actually applying to Rice, but he wasnt originally a signee i guess is what you would call it. They told him to fill out an application because he had to apply & be accepted first before getting any scholarships, etc. How much that will affect your chances, I’m not really sure of since my friend is really accomplished academically. But im sure “protecting” your application is not a count against you for being admitted, i would assume that it would only be a positive addition to the strength of your application

xuladude has a good point. Being an athlete will help your overall application as would excelling in any sport/activity. But it will not get you in if your stats are far below par, unless you are recruited specifically to play with a scholarship

This is all good info, thanks to everyone. I was just wondering the extent that it helped in tge admission process. Looks like it will give me a nice addition to stats that are already in the range for acceptance.

Yes. I wouldn’t worry. Smart athletes are what Rice is about. Good luck!

I’m a freshman and a walk-on at Rice. I was in contact with the coach prior to submitting my application. I was told that app was “protected.” It’s certainly not a guarantee. The rest of my stats were competitive with non-athletes and i was deferred and waitlisted before finally gaining acceptance.

i have no idea what ‘protected’ means in that case.
