Athletic Edge

So, just wondering. . .
what is the deal with athletes at Harvard?
Any special admission edge?

bump.........

if you're recruited.

It gets a rating but it'll really only work to serious advantage if you're recruitment material.

That said, Joey Cheek was rejected EA, and he was a gold medalist--and Harvard loves its shiny medals. And very few people are outright rejected EA. So that'll tell you something.

aw man :( it would have been amazing to go to school with joey cheek. i loved watching him during the olympics.

:( , but they did have James Blake go to school there, and he's now a top 10 ranked tennis player :)

Maybe Joey Cheek was too complacent in his application.

Or they don't have a speed skating team.

Or he was underqualified in other ways.

the lack of a speed skating team doesn't really matter--every school loves to brag about how many Olympic medalists they have.

"At 26, he is finally ready to go to college, and he applied to Harvard for early admission. In spite of his fine class rank (roughly 20th out of 300) and SAT scores ("slightly north of 1400'' on the old scale), the school rejected him and said that he probably wouldn't be accepted if he entered the general applicant pool."

that's better than most HYPS athletes, and many non-athletes.

I don't really understand why he was rejected. His essays must have been terrible?

There must have been something that was amiss in his application, but we will never know, since admissions officers are not allowed to speak about any one applicant because of confidentiality.

Isn't he going to P-town or some equally-magical place?

That ain't too shabby. I'm sure he'll get over it.

Possible that he came across as a huge ass.

I read somewhere (wish I remembered the source) that it had to do with the fact that he went straight from HS to hardcore speedskating training for so many years and hadn't done any academic work in nearly 10 years. they weren't sure his HS record was enough to prove he could handle Harvard's workload.. something like that..

Or maybe they were just feeling perverse.. lol

yep. he chose princeton over yale, stanford, duke, columbia, NYU, georgetown, and UNC. you'll get to see how it all shook out on his college-choice reality show on MTV, "joey cheek goes to college."

Ooooooh. I remember hearing about that.

When does it air?
