Athletic hook - no interviews... Good or bad sign

I was wondering if anyone can shed some light on this - DS applied to several schools as a day student. Some of the schools called us to set up an interview even though it was past the interviewing time from what I have read. The interviews didn’t occur until Feb as DS was a late applicant.

The interviews have been ongoing until this past week - he had 2 this past week, 1 prior week. I would appreciate any insight. Specifically, I was wondering on the schools that did not contact him for an interview, there is one in particular he really likes. Is that a sure sign that he is out of the running? Is there a correlation between interviews and acceptances? For the schools that are still interviewing him (as late as this past week), to be honest I was a bit surprised since I read in CC that decisions have most likely been made a week to 10 days before M10. Should I take this as a positive sign?

Many thanks for your insight - pardon if I sound completely ignorant; not only am I new to CC, I have no experience with Prep schools…

I assume you/your son emailed each coach directly separate from the application? Wy was he a late applicant? I guess I need more information to weigh in.

Boarding schools (and many Day schools) will make exceptions for extreme athletes. I personally know of a situation where a top student-athlete expressed interest to a top day school in April. The student was rushed through the interview process and was offered a spot – in late April.

So for top athletes, the deadlines are sometimes bent a little. From your screenname it sounds like your son is a soccer player. It really depends on how much pull the soccer coach has with admissions, and this varies with the school.

Its a good sign that they interviewed him so late. But don’t take to this to mean he is admitted. Good luck

@center, thanks. He did email the coaches separately and a few of them engaged immediately and a few of them did not respond. We just found out we were moving due to work in January so apps did not get completed until mid February.

Should I assume to mark off the ones who did not set up an interview? But I would say the ones he is really interested in engaged right away except for one. Thanks!

@sgopal2 , so you think the interviews late in the game is a good sign? What do you think happens next after this interview? Does the AO reach back out to the coach or they decide whether the overall app is worthwhile? I just am clueless on this process… Thanks again!!!

Are these school interviews or coach interviews? If I was you/your son. I would send an email to the school in question. RE stating his interest, reviewing his credentials and anything meaningful. Ask for an interview!

You will have your answer in four days. No speculation here is of any value.

I guess since they are day schools I thought the dates might be a little different. day schools are easier as there is no boarding /dorm algorithms to manage

oops day student not day schools

Did your interview with the AO or the coach? The M10 deadline is only a few days away, so most decisions have already been made.

The exception however is if your son is such a prize catch for soccer that the coach absolutely must have him. In this case the coach needs to make this known to the dean of admissions.

Is your son truly one of the top soccer players in the country (or world)?

He interviewed with the AO. I don’t think I would consider him a prize catch but maybe he plays a position they need. I was wondering the same question since I think decisions have already been made. It would appear from the late interviews that not all decisions have been made. Thanks for the comments!

@SoccerMom2018 – Do you have a Development Academy nearby? Did your son try out for that program? Kids that play DAP usually can not go to private schools. And the latest stats I have seen is that 85% of the Div 1 commits come from DAP. In the Boston area, we have 3 DAP soccer clubs on the boys side and there is only about 80 in the whole country.
