My son accepted a great offer of almost full tuition to an out if state D1 college for baseball. He was also awarded $1000 in merit $ which qualifies him for in state tuition. The in state tuition cost is much less than the amount that he signed for on his NLI…does anyone know how that works? Does the extra money just go back to the baseball program for future scholarships?
Ask the college. They would be the ones who know the specifics.
Yes I plan too tomorrow as this cropped up over the weekend…just wondering if anyone else had been in a similar situation
I agree you should ask the coach.
It may depend on whether your S received X dollars, or X% of tuition. The coach does likely have latitude to apply scholarship $ to room and board charges.
As long as he meets the requirements to accept merit aid with athletic aid (don’t remember the exact numbers but it is like top 10% of class OR a 3.0 gpa OR a certain sat/act score), he can take both.
I bet there is a person either in the athletic office or in the financial aid office that works with athletic funding. My daughter had a bunch of different sources of aid and her ‘person’ was very good at applying the aid so that it was most beneficial to daughter. Some could only be used for tuition (resident grant and BF in Florida) so that was applied first), school merit could only be used for school billed costs, etc. In her final year she did end up with excess aid from her athletic scholarship and the school kept that.
I think it will depend on whether the aid is specified for tuition only on the NLI (although that can be changed even after signed) or if the school has a policy about athletic money being used for things other than tuition.
