Any ideas how it works at Kenyon? Are there slots or "pushes" for recruited athletes?

There are no ‘slots’ for recruited athletes but coaches are asked to rank recruited athletes prior to admission and this ranking can impact the decision. Coaches have most influence for kids with borderline academics who are more likely to be deferred than admitted.
Top recruits receive a much bigger push than all others but this information is not typically made available to prospective students.

It also makes a difference what sport you’re talking about. The college will dip pretty far down for a swimmer who can help win a national championship or a football player who might actually help secure a single win. If you’re a decent baseball player or something, don’t expect it to help all that much.

Was told coach has lots of pull for EDI, less for ED2 and RD. (Soccer)

Ha, well my honest opinion is that the coach is saying that because he wants your son to apply ED, but there may be some truth to it. There’s no question that applying ED is a big help for being admitted. And I suppose coaches are most inclined to pull hard for guys who have actually committed. The coach pulls hardest for the ED guys because they’re definitely going to matriculate if they’re accepted, whereas if he’s pulling hard for a RD guy, he’s got to expend all that political capital and then there’s only a 30 percent chance of matriculation. The soccer team should have some pull this year. They had a really great group on seniors this year, guys who were liked both on and off the field, and a strong season as well. I think the admissions office will be looking to give them as much of a hand as they can in trying to replace that class.

For what it’s worth, we asked, and were told by the coach of a different sport, that he did not lose influence with admissions after ED.

We were told that by both the coach and the admissions officer. We asked many people very specific questions while we were there. We were also told that the school is need blind during the ED1 round only (again, the admissions officer told us this).
