Athletic Recruiting

How much admissions advantage do you get if you are a recruited athlete at Davidson? Does it make a difference depending upon the sport that recruits you (e.g. basketball vrs. track?)

Clearly Basketball above all other sports at Davidson is not something controlled by admissions. Our team is very academically telanted, but it is 100% scholarship players meaning that essentially the coaches get who they want. Any other sport and sure it will help in some cases a good deal if ou're the top recruit for a sport, but you'll need a complete package that Admissions likes.

This confirms my understanding---thanks!

orangelights - is it possible to get recruited for a strong sport like crew even though it's club rather than varsity level at Davidson?

Hate to break it to you guys, but Davidson's not big on recruiting, in general. If you're interested on athletic recruitment in North Carolina, try Duke, but at Davidson you have to pass through the admissions committee before they will think about putting you on athletic consideration.

The saying here goes, "There are no jocks at Davidson."

yeah - coaches do look for prospects and encourage people to apply (probably telling them they'd get the athlete scholar scholarship), but, supposedly, people aren't accepted to Davidson because they will be great on the basketball, track, etc team. The D1 athletes go through the same admission process and obviously will get a good bit of brownie points for being a great athlete, but someone academically weak wouldn't get accepted because they're Usain Bolt's cousin.

Davidson coaches recruit athletes. Davidson has athletic scholarships, although not anywhere near the maximum per sport allowed by the NCAA ( except basketball, which has the maximum, and football, which has no athletic scholarships). All athletes have to go through admissions ( coaches have no guaranteed "slots" ), but being a recruited athlete helps. In addition to "regular" athletic scholarships, which are given out at coaches discretion, Davidson has "scholar-athlete" scholarships, given out through admissions like other merit scholarships ( Bryan Scholarship and Davidson Scholars).

What about for soccer at davidson? Is the program good? Is it possible to be a student-athlete at davidson??? I can't imagine having time for school...

Of course it's possible. I guess it depends on the person somewhat. I would say if you can get accepted to Davidson, you probably could handle it. Another thing to think about is that you dont have nearly as much time spent at class in college (~8hrs a day in HS, ~8 hrs a WEEK at davidson). a huge percentage of students are varsity atheletes there.

There are two or three varsity athletes on my hall. Every girl on my hall is an intramural athlete, and there are two or three club athletes, still. It is definitely more work for the varsity athletes ... but most of the students are athletes. Almost all of the freshmen are athletes of some variety or other.
