athletic scholarships

What's the state of athletic scholarships at Colgate today? Now that they are offered beyond football, are a certain number (or equivalent) available per sport?

Colgate is a Division I program in the Patriot League. They are allowed to fund 9.9 scholarships for men’s soccer and (12 or 13, not sure) for women’s soccer. I don’t know if they fully fund all of those slots. A friend’s son graduated from Colgate several years ago. He was on the soccer team. He had a scholarship that covered 70% of his cost of attendance.

Only this year is Colgate offering football scholarships. It has offered a few scholarships in other sports, particularly team sports, for some years now.

That said, I don’t know about numbers asserted in the last post. At the end of the day, and to appreciate how current policy that might impact your circumstances, I would speak directly to the coach whose sport might sponsor your son or daughter. Each coach has his/her allocations, limitations and priorities as you can well imagine.

Best of luck with your college search.

Go 'gate!

How about mens track and field? Does anyone know if they fund scholarships?

As noted above, for years Colgate kept somewhat “above” the fray of athletic scholarships, preferring to admit scholar athletes on the basis of their academic abilities as the Ivies had long done. This was for many years the model for small liberal arts colleges and the Ivies. But it has certainly changed.

Formerly, athletes at Colgate could always get an academic scholarship on a need basis - if they couldn’t afford the tuition. But it wasn’t an athletic scholarship of the kind other schools gave to top athletes whether they needed it or not. It was always for academics on a need basic.

But, this is more and more difficult to do while still maintaining some semblance of good athletic teams, and the Patriot League was one of the last (if not actually “the” last) to finally adopt actual athletic scholarships, most recently in football. Your best bet is to talk to the Athletic Department or a coach in the sport you’re interested in to get the latest information. They’re only a phone call away.
