colleges like talent, and i know athletic talent is included. so my question is, how would colleges (for me, ivies) know if you excel at a particular sport, and you aren't just "on the team". i say this because i know colleges cannot tell if you have athletic talent based on your transcript alone. is there a place on the application for this kind of thing?
thanks in advance

If you’re good at sports, colleges will come to you. I live in a small town where our football team isn’t very good but we have one standout player. The Princeton, Yale, uPenn, Cornell, Columbia etc coaches all came to check him out and he is Princeton bound.

Have your coach send your game tape to as many colleges as possible!

well i run track and cross country, so i guess it would be times that i would send the coaches. but i was wondering how the ivies would know if you excelled at a particular sport, without planning on being recruited… would you notify them somehow of varsity letters etc?

List as many awards that you’ve won during track then. For instance, if you are the captain of your team or made the All-Academic or All-Conference in your area, list that as well. That way colleges will see that you didn’t just tag along on the team to boost your resume.

You must be a recruited athlete if you’re hoping for admission help. If you are a division 1athletic recruit, you would typically know it by your sophomore year. Once you’ve passed that hurdle, then let the coaches know about you. Those conversations will lead to discovering if your particular talent matches their recruiting needs.
I’m not sure about track but generally, recruited athletes would be tops in the state and possibly well known nationally (first-third team all state, regional all-american, etc).
Best of luck!

i’m planning on being recruited (and i know how much it can help with admissions). but where would i make my athletic achievements/awards/etc known to the schools im applying to? on my application? details would be appreciated

If you to the Varsity Athletics page on each university’s website, find the team page, there is usually a page called “Recruiting” or “Recruits” or “Prospective Athletes.” Virtually all schools have an on-line form you can fill out with basic information about your grades, test scores and athletic achievements. This form goes to the appropriate coach, and if they are interested, they will contact you or your coach. Princeton has a form like this.
