Athletic Tip at CMU?

Does CMU give athletic endorsements? Are the helpful in getting admitted?

DD2 is a slightly below the average GPA and ACT score, but would be able to swim for CMU. Could that help her admission chances?

It could. She should contact the swim coach. Yes, athletic tips are given at many schools, but it depends upon the school, the sport, the coach and the need for the athlete. But, yes, CMU does like athletes, and it does help. Being able to swim and being an asset to the swim team, however, are two separate things. IF the coach feels the team would benefit and if there aren’t other swimmers that are better than she is also trying for a spot, it could happen. The athletic director, the coaches and admissions tend to come up with who the best bets are to get admissions offers.

Thanks Cptofthehouse.

At this point, all I am doing is trying to develop a preliminary list of schools for my Sophomore, since we just received her PSAT and PLAN results this week.

I thought CMU could be of interest because her strongest subject is Math. I looked up the swim times from a recent CMU Women’s swim meet and looked at the times for the 200 freestyle. CMU had 4 Women in the event. DD2’s 200 freestyle time is faster than 2 of the 4 competitors and slower than the other 2. It is not great, but she could contribute. And since she is only 15, hopefully she would be faster by the time she got there.

However, DD2’s GPA is about 0.2 below our High School’s average GPA for students who are accepted to CMU according to Naviance.

Based on your comment, it sounds like it would still be worth adding CMU to the list.

I appreciate any insights.
