Has anyone else here been a student athletic trainer in high school? Is it a popular program at your school? Is it viewed as a weird extracurricular to participate in? Does your school attend a state competition? I think it'll be interesting to see how these programs can vary and compare some experiences.

I’ve never heard of it, but it sounds great!

I’ve been a student athletic trainer at my public CA high school for two years and I love it. We don’t attend any competitions - frankly, I wasn’t even aware such things existed. In our program, we run a training room after school every day during football season to cover practice and cover all games. We also cover two basketball tournaments, a wrestling tournament, and home dual meets plus a major track meet and a few softball games. We are all CPR and first aid certified and are trained in injury prevention, diagnosis, and care. I can stretch athletes, take care of blood, test for concussions/sprains/dislocations, etc. and tape wrists, thumbs, fingers, and ankles. In addition to covering large events as a group, advanced students each cover individual sports. I was the student athletic trainer for girls’ tennis and for wrestling. I really enjoy it and hope to continue in college if a program is available or start one if it isn’t.
