I wasnt getting much response in another forum, so I thought Id post it here.

Hey everyone

One day I want to become an athletic trainer for a collegiate/professional sports organization. Sports Medicine is something Ive always been interested in, but now Ive realized that its somewhat of a narrow option as far as colleges go. Apparently only a small number of schools actually have an athletic training major. Is that the only way to go if you want to become an athletic trainer? What are some of the better schools if I want to go this route. I guess Im just new to this, and I cant find too much when I google and such.

Does anyone have any information on this that they can share with me?

Thanks

In our state, there are scads of AT programs. Some are BS, some are BHS. Some are in the education dept, some in health science, some in allied health science. USF just brought their AT program under the med school dept of orthopaedics, giving it even more credibility. One can major in it at FSU, UMiami, UF, UNF, UCF, USF, FGCU, UTampa, Florida Southern College, just to name a few. Not as many masters programs, but more and more are popping up. Some get an AT undergrad degree and then go onto get a MPT or DPT.

Confused, a lot of times the Athletic Training gets hidden under things such as Physical Education, Health Management, Kinesiocology, etc. Like they have stated above, there are many schools that offer it. Thinking about it right now, I can think of 3 in my area that DONT. Meanwhile, in that same area, I can come up with about ten that do.

Athletic Training is what I am going to be studying in college as well. I'm excited! You have to realize that at many schools, getting into the athletic training program is very competitive. At SEMO, they average admitting 10 a year.
