Out of curiosity, how much can being a good athlete help me in admissions?

I'm a runner. My goal is to run around a 15:00 5k during the cross-country season next year (which would easily make me one of the top 5 runners in the state).

I'm a runner. My goal is to run around a 15:00 5k during the cross-country season next year (which would easily make me one of the top 5 runners in the state).

for stanford it does not help as much as it would at other top universities (such as ivy leagues). they are normally much pickier than other schools with their athletes to being with, and to top it off this year they had an amazing track/cross country recruiting class sign with them. ive heard of athletes who were accepted to schools like harvard (primarily due to athletics... but still had decent grades) who were rejected from stanford.

however, if you are a top applicant / borderline applicant (as so many qualified people who apply are), athletics will definitely push you over the edge and make you a pick over people without a hook.

I knew a "borderline applicant" (had a few C's on his record, but he was a good student with an upward curve, plus very good E.Cs) and he said he was pretty sure he got into Stanford because he was good at track and cross country.

1500 for 5k is sick. would you mind telling me your name, I might have heard of you.

but yes, it will help. This year Stanford is recruiting a HUGE (5-7ish) number of recruits from the nation's top runners (Chris Derrick 2nd at footlocker is one of htem i believe). If you have a decent application and can get recruited from Stanford, it will help a lot. Get in contact with the coach now and tell him your plans, i'm sure he'll be glad to know you're interested.

i agree with cory

annd DAMN 1500 is fhdsagh

yea, those that know about running know that stanford has some beastly xc recruits coming in. cory123, i believe chris derrick has verbally committed to stanford. op, what is your current 5k time?

HPA, Derrick's definitely recruited, it's more than a verbal commitment. Kevin Havel, Dylan Ferris, Ben Johnson, Stanford is absolutely stacked on incoming freshman for distance running.

I see you're a junior, and b/c they have a ton of great guys this year doesn't mean they won't recruit you. Don't count on a ton of scholarship money, however, and don't slack off on your grades, but running will definitely aid you tremendously in admission with that time. Contact the coach sometime.

Yeah, I'm curious, what name/which state are you from?

even if not recruited, u'd definitely have the oppurtunity to walk on at stanford. 15 min is DI quality time.

also, what are your track pr's? those give a better indication of ability because xc courses differ so much throughout the nation.

If that 15:00 is on a legit 5k course, then it's sick. It will definitely help.
But as you probably know, not every recruited runner gets a scholarship (see: football, basketball), and those who do will usually get a few thousand dollars (I don't know exact amounts).

This was very sad, apparently he was recruited by Stanford...
